During the week Rauma offers lots of different exhibitions, shows, concerts etc. During the Lace Week there's also the Black Lace Night when shops and exhibitions are open in the night and people are recommended to wear something with black lace. Usually thousands of people (both those who live in Rauma and tourists) go to the center of the town to meet friends and having fun :) Leave a Comment

The narrowest street in Finland *All kind of dirtying and messing up is strongly prohibited under penalty of 20 FIM*. (What will happen to the old placard after EURO; How much will it the fine be in EUROs?) Unfortunately, I haven't been revisiting since the Euro but if someone goes to Rauma, please check it out and let me know :-)) Leave a Comment

Old Rauma is very famous in Finland, as it's so original. They also make great lace in Old Rauma and they even have a special happening for it, it's called 'the night of the black lace'. Leave a Comment

This is a small but very nice Franciscan church in Rauma which is unusually decorated if you compare it to most of the Finnish churches (which are Lutheran). This is a very old building too but it's pretty well preserved. Leave a Comment

Old Rauma is the official #1 spot, of course, being on UNESCO's World Heritage list as a well conserved wooden city quarter. Don't mistake me, however, it's not a museum by any means. The buildings may be old as hell and made of wood, but that doesn't mean all kinds of shops aren't open in them these days -- electronics stores, clothing boutiques, banks, bicycle shops, everything. Old Rauma isn't celebrated by putting it in a glass jar, but by keeping it alive and well!
The Night of the Black Lace, in late June, is a night when the shops in the Old Rauma area are open very late, and people walk around wearing as much black lace clothing as they can find. It's a local festival, and though it's not as flashy and huge as the Rio carnivals, it's got a very lovely sort of old-time glamour about it. Leave a Comment
