Forte: Rolling around on the floor

The night after Vappu weekend , really isn't the night to go out. Only the truly desperate were wnadering the street and we ended up at the Finnish version of Illusions nightclub in Worthing. Our breath was carefully checked for any trace of alcohol ( nicely hidden by a ***load of chewing gum ) . Only to be confronted by someone rolling around on the floor as soon as we got inside.
We got harrassed by some very ropey girls one went up to us and just said " my friend needs a man " , sadly her friend was an alcoholic dwarf and went home alone.
Ended up drinking absinthe with a 16 year old called Sergei that we couldn't get rid of.

Ones of the boats moored on the banks of the Aura , does a neat line in tropical drinks despite the rather chilly May weather. You can order whisky and banana liqcuor , if you want.
You can also watch crazy Finns taking all their clothes off and sliding down the hill opposite on their arses.

Cosmic

Large cafe in a shopping centre that lets you read comics while you drink. Like thats not going to attract loads of nerds. The pumping soundtrack of Iron Maiden was playing havoc with my afternoon hangover and there were a number of 80's metal casualties hanging round the place , wearing the dreaded black t-shirt , pentagram necklace combination. However all of these seemingly insurmountable problems were negated by the fact that I could read Calvin and Hobbes while nursing myself back to something resembling normal. I'm particulary partial to the ones where he builds really twisted snowmen or imagines he's a huge dinosaur smashing up his school.

Dress Code: See above , if you've got one of those Witchfinder general style hats you'll look particulary smooth.

Dave and Pauli

Bar upstairs - Nightclub Downstairs , has pretensions of grandeur as they wouldn't let Jiikku wear his student overalls. Happy hour till 12 upstairs - 2 Euro's a beer , 3 for a shot with a mixer ,as cheap as it's likely to get in Finland.
Club downstairs plays cheesy chart music with the accompanying videos on large screen.
Worth visiting because when we were there , me and Dave were the only blokes on the dancefloor , surrounded by about 30 girls for about an hour.

The Old School: The Old School

Tastes a bit funny

Huge pub set in what used to be an old Swedish speaking school , they've left the maps and the blackboard in and they brew their own beer on the premises.

The brewery is actually on a raised platform above the bar which explains the slight mens changing room smell in the pub.

Their own beer is all school related , Teacher is a medium lager and Master tastes like a version of Newcastle Brown Ale.

Am I very big or is the chair very small?

Former kindergarten that does a nice pint of Koff and has that minimalist Scandinavian furniture thing , you canread the NME , or sit in one of the original kindergarten chairs , which are rather small .

Koulu: have a pint and smoke a cigarette in school..

Pub built in an old school... they´ve left the blackboard and other school-stuff to the walls. It´s quite original, I think. You really know that you´re sitting in an old school, drinking beer.... for some reason it gives you certain pleasure...
However, they have their own brewery -very tasty beer! Also they have sometimes live-music.
Good pub.

Ribs: Jazz by the river

I´ve been told that this place is built insie the old townhall. Even if it´s not true, it describes the place perfectly. It´s quite narrow, but surroundings are perfect. I never fail to go here when in Turku. It´s located just on the other side of street from the cathedral, down by the river.
This is he place to go, no matter what time of the day it is. They have excellent live-jazz in the evenings (not every night, check the scedule), tasty food if you fancy a dinner and my thing is to go there for the saturdaymorning. I order a cup of coffee and read the newspaper or chat with friends.
I think it´s owned by a dutch-man. Very, very, very, very nice!

This is probably the most famous pub in Turku. It is located in an old pharmacist, so they have left some old pharmacist-stuff on the shelfs etc. there´s no music here, just a cosy hum of conversation. The only but here is the smoke.. I don´t know why, but it really gets to you in this place. It even bothers some people who smoke themselves...
But overall, great pub. This is not the youngsters spot. Older people come here too. Great place to see how people in Turku spend their friday-nights.

Vessa: Old public toilet

the pride and joy of Turku; "Vessa". It really is an old public toilet -my father used to visit it when it was used for the original purposes... (or then it´s just another of his stories...never know with him. ;)) But what I do know is, that this is a nice, a bit on a small side, cosy pub. Musicians from the consert-house on the other side of the street, often come here after rehearsals or consert. So you might even spot someone famous. ;)

Dress Code: I doubt that they have one...
