We were in Turku on Friday and Saturday and we found so many people along the banks of the "aurajoki" (the turku river) just walking or sitting on the green embankments of the river.
It is wonderful !
Some people who had been in Turku during the week told us it was not so beautiful and i think it must depend too on the weather conditions....when we got there it was very warm and for sure more people than usually went out.
Dress Code: Just go! who cares about dress!
These are three pubs in three boats on the Aurajoki. The atmophere is friendly and it is easy too meet new people.
On the Friday and Saturday we went there we couldn't find a place to sit so we had our beer...standing up.

This is the local brewery, its name is Koulu which means school, it is fantastic old building and inside you can see the actual brewery and try few very interesting own none filtered lager and bock beers.
There are plenty of restaurants by the river, on a nice summer night they look very beautiful and romantic. Of course, if you are not romantic couple, not even Venice will help you to be one, but here it is really your chance to enjoy romantic evening in Turku.
Former kindergarten that does a nice pint of Koff and has that minimalist Scandinavian furniture thing , you canread the NME , or sit in one of the original kindergarten chairs , which are rather small .

Bar upstairs - Nightclub Downstairs , has pretensions of grandeur as they wouldn't let Jiikku wear his student overalls. Happy hour till 12 upstairs - 2 Euro's a beer , 3 for a shot with a mixer ,as cheap as it's likely to get in Finland.
Club downstairs plays cheesy chart music with the accompanying videos on large screen.
Worth visiting because when we were there , me and Dave were the only blokes on the dancefloor , surrounded by about 30 girls for about an hour.

This is a very small pub just in front of the castle. Also not far from the harbour, it is good pub as it is private owned and have some local style and feelings inside, but well... last time here I actually had only cola as I was not really on a holiday here ;-)
This bar 10 is a kind of a sports bar, it is a place where you can send your Lotto, Toto and other gambling forms and well as to watch sports TV, play some darts and of course, drink some beer, and its cheaper here ;-)
Old Bank is a public house that has been renovated in an old bank house near the Turku market square.
The settings of the pub are quite grand; the over hundred years old building boasts with glass paintings and ornaments. Try not to be too drunk to be able to enjoy the atmosphere.
Otherwise, the place is an ordinary Finnish bar. The crowd can get quite loud especially on Fridays and Saturdays, and there is smoke everywhere. There is a smallish patio during summer months.
Large cafe in a shopping centre that lets you read comics while you drink. Like thats not going to attract loads of nerds. The pumping soundtrack of Iron Maiden was playing havoc with my afternoon hangover and there were a number of 80's metal casualties hanging round the place , wearing the dreaded black t-shirt , pentagram necklace combination. However all of these seemingly insurmountable problems were negated by the fact that I could read Calvin and Hobbes while nursing myself back to something resembling normal. I'm particulary partial to the ones where he builds really twisted snowmen or imagines he's a huge dinosaur smashing up his school.
Dress Code: See above , if you've got one of those Witchfinder general style hats you'll look particulary smooth.
The night after Vappu weekend , really isn't the night to go out. Only the truly desperate were wnadering the street and we ended up at the Finnish version of Illusions nightclub in Worthing. Our breath was carefully checked for any trace of alcohol ( nicely hidden by a ***load of chewing gum ) . Only to be confronted by someone rolling around on the floor as soon as we got inside.
We got harrassed by some very ropey girls one went up to us and just said " my friend needs a man " , sadly her friend was an alcoholic dwarf and went home alone.
Ended up drinking absinthe with a 16 year old called Sergei that we couldn't get rid of.

Every night (except Monday) Pepe offers live music. If there is no special band presenting anything, everyone may go on stage for making the show. If still nobody, Pepe himself takes the guitarre and plays nice pieces, depending on the audience. 19.5.2004 evening on the stage was "Bonsu Drums"-band.
Update (2006): Pepe has sold the place, but for sure you may find Pepe playing in some bar or restaurant in Turku!
This is probably the most famous pub in Turku. It is located in an old pharmacist, so they have left some old pharmacist-stuff on the shelfs etc. there´s no music here, just a cosy hum of conversation. The only but here is the smoke.. I don´t know why, but it really gets to you in this place. It even bothers some people who smoke themselves...
But overall, great pub. This is not the youngsters spot. Older people come here too. Great place to see how people in Turku spend their friday-nights.
This brewery restaurant (= panimoravintola) is made to old school (=Koulu). That´s why it´s very different from many others. And it´s very big to be a pub. You can usually find a quiet spot if yu want, or stay at the most crowded area, where the most "life" is.
They do have big beergarden at summer, and they really do brew own beers. And the beers are good!! By the way, their names are also different types of teachers :)
They do have food also, but we haven´t taste it, we come here for the house beers!
If you have seen Finnish Vares-movies, or read the Vares books, this is one of the places where detective Vares goes for a beer. ;)
Dress Code: No dress code. There are all kinds of people!
It´s called cafe, but it is a pub. And a pub with great selection of changing beers! I don´t remeber seeing so many "new" ones for a while (new for me). Staff knew a lot about their beers and helped us to find interesting ones. We were going to have one bottle, but because of the good staff and selection, we found ourselves staying for three bottles ;)
There is lots of comics, Finnish and international. Finnish comic-drawers have drawn something at the walls also and have written somethin also.
Colors of the place are not so usual, quite colorful place! And I even liked the music. the Doors, Sisters of Mercy, Billy idol, Rolling Stones..
And it was reasonable priced!
I´m glad my friend told us to go here.
