The building was constructed in a modernist style in 1904.The museum worked before in a building of a former observatory on Vartiovuori-hill about 400 m to the south from the Cathedral. The building of an observatory was constructed by K.Engel in 1819. The exposition of the museum represents the second-largest art collection of Finland. Only after moving to the new building it became accessible to visitors in full. We approached the museum in the evening when it was already closed. We hope to appreciate a collection next time. Before our travel I thought that on our way from Turku to Stockholm we should meet only Aland islands. I have been very surprised having found out, that between Finland and Sweden there are about 10000 islands generally uninhabited!

Take a stroll around the market hall and the market square. Turku's outdoor market offers a big variety of all kinds of products. The atmosphere is unique and perfect for people watching. Last but not least there are many restaurants around the market square. Leave a Comment

altough I told you that Turku is a summer city, there's lot of to do in wintertimes too. This winter has been very cold in here and the ice areas are thicker than ever. So now you can walk along the Aura river! usually the rivers are quite dangerous, ice is quite thin and the water moves all the time. But now, in this winter 2003 you can look at Turku in a new way. If you click this picture, you will see two cars parked next to the castle. I didn’t want them to ruin my picture, so I had this great idea… I asked my friends Bridget and Ceddy to stand so as to hide those cars…and the result was this:-) I looked at them making those funny gestures and hiding nothing at all because they were obviously too far away from my camera…and found it so funny that I took the picture anyway ;-) Leave a Comment

when walking outside on a winter's day cold as -38 celsius, you will not be meeting many people, even the locals stay home cosy :) the city felt amazingly tranquile that day...even the ducks were sleeping while trying to warm themselves on a spot in the river where the stream was too lively to get frozen. The silent wonderful Aurajoki-river saw very much during existence on its coasts the city of Turku. It is very pleasant to walk on quay and to admire a beauty of the old city, ducks and swans.

It looks rather interesting from outside, but I must say that I was a bit disapointed from this as a whole, don't know, I was expecting for more, maybe some old style bar or something, and there was no any. Leave a Comment

This is the very old Turku city, it is a bit distance from the modern city centre, but you can still walk here by foot, about 10 - 15 minutes. Leave a Comment
