It was a beautiful day and we decided to visit the Botanic Gardens of Turku University at Ruissalo island. It's a very nice place to go for a walk and entrance is free to the outer gardens. We heard a nightingale sing which was nice! Besides the thousands of different plants, there are some lily ponds, gazebos and stuff. Open daily from 8 to 20.
Please note: no dogs allowed. There's also a cafeteria, should you need a sandwich or something. Open from 10 to 17.
Bus nr 8 from Turku center (Eerikinkatu).

This is probably the biggest and best preserved castle in Finland so don't miss it if you are in Turku. It consists of several buildings build in different times starting from 1280. The rulers, Swedish Dukes, lived and held fancy parties in this castle in their time in the 16th century. You can read more about the colourful history in the link I've provided. Nowadays the castle is a museum open to public but you can also have your own special occasions in the festive rooms which you can rent (write to turun.linna@amica.fi). There's also a gift shop with, for instance, jewelry made after old items found in excavations in the area.
Open daily from 10 to 18.

Turku Castle is a significant landmark at the mouth of Aurajoki River.
The castle was damaged by Soviet aircraft in the beginning days of the Continuation War,it
was badly damaged by the bombings in 1941. The fully repaired castle was opened to the public in 1961.
The Castle is the symbol of Finland's most popular brand of mustard, called Turun sinappi (Turku mustard). The mustard was subject to a minor controversy because the company producing it was sold to Swedish ownership and production moved to Sweden. Nowadays the mustard made in Turku is called Auran sinappi (Aura River mustard).
Please check the opening hours because I missed it! I saw only outside the castle...

this is the only street in turku without snow.. they have this special de-icing system under the pavement, so that when snows touches the ground, it melts straight away..
this lets people do shopping without worrying about falling or slipping on the ice
cool idea

The Finnish Moomin trolls can be visited on their island in Naantali north of Turku. If you like things Finnish, or have children or an inner child, this place is for you. As theme parks go, this is one of the best I have visited as nothing is ruined in the landscape but things are built according to the island. There is also a walkway with themes from the original Moomin stories we recognise in Finland and Sweden, more spooky and sad than the cheerful Japanese cartoons that sold internationally later. Something that makes the children think for themselves and use their imagination and their feelings.
"Talk" to the Moomins and visit their home and much more. The town of Naantali itself is also worth a visit with its nice wooden houses and medieval church. See my special page for more pictures and info on both.

The newest church in Turku is a wooden chapel built with donations from the people and organisations around Finland. The chapel has very striking architecture, and it has raised attention in architecture exhibitions.
The interior is made completely of wood, and it looks like being inside an capsized boat. The outside is covered in copper. This creates a nice juxtaposition between the interiors and the exteriors.
The chapel is open every day 12-18 and there is no entrance fee.

There is a real campus life in Turku. The University of Turku, Åbo Akademi and The Turku School of Economics and Business Administration are all situated quite near each other.
The university is Finland's second largest and it has a reputation of good quality of research, teaching and services. The university has six faculties which are Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medicine, Law, Social Sciences and Education. I studied myself in the Faculty of Law.
The main language is Finnish but each faculty offers study opportunies also in English. The university is a member of Coimbra Group which is a network of Europe's universities.

The biggest fire in Finland's history was in 1872. The fire destroyed three-quarters of the buildings in the city of Turku and five-sixths of the dwellings.
On Luostarinmäki (Monastery Hill) 17 wooden houses survived the flames and nowadays that area contains a museum where time seems to have stopped.

My parents got married here in 1975. I wasn't there at that time though but couple of years later when I was little girl I thought myself that there are too many stairs before getting inside the church. The building is majestetic and beautiful.
The catherdal was completed in 1300 but it suffered major fire damages in 1318. The repairs and renovations continued tino the 15th century.
