I think the absolute best way to travel to and from Turku are the cruise ships that shuttle between Turku and Stockholm in Sweden. The Viking Line and Silja Line ferry companies operate two daily services each (morning and evening) over to Sweden. There is a special magic to crossing the Baltic on these floating hotels, whether you do it in the dark and spend the time at the various night clubs, or in the sunlight admiring the archipelago gliding by for almost all the way from one coast to the other.
I think the Turku public transportation is very good. They have a wide variety of bus cards that have a set amount of trips or set amount of time in them and you can recharge them at any bus after purchasing them from the main bus office. For shorter stays tickets are available that allow you to travel on the buses as much as you want over a 24h period. The only real problem with the bus service is if you are into nightlife, as the buses don't operate between 2:30am and 5:30 am or so, and most clubs close around 4:00am, so at that time everyone needs a taxi to get home, and there aren't enough taxis to service everyone!

I flew Finnair non-stop from NY to Helsinki. From NY it took about 7 hours. From Helsinki it was almost 10 hours..;) The trip by car from Helsinki to Turku is about 2 hours.
We took buses everywhere...it's a very good system.

From Sweden or Germany can you come by ferry. Turku has an airport, but there aren´t that many flights from abroad, so you should first fly to Helsinki. From there you can easily fly or come by train, bus or car.
Anyway, Finlands roads are excellent so you can easily drive from everywhere and enjoy the landscapes!
Turku´s city is quite small so you can walk there pretty much everywhere. The public transportation is always on time and the buses go almost everywhere! One day ticket is 25 FIM and 'one time ticket' is 10 FIM. In the city area it isn´t that nice to cycle, but little bit outside from the centre it is a must!

2 hours by train from Helsinki
pretty expensive, but the train is a real delight
reclining seats, trolley services, special areas for kids, perfect
Take a bus N°1 to go to the castle, which is on the west side of the town. The rest can easily be visited on foot.

The best way is to take an airplane to Turku. You can also go by plane to Helsinki and take a bus from there. The bus takes about 3 hours, but it's a nice wiew. A connecting flight from Helsinki to Turku is also possible.

S/s Ukko-Pekka cruises around Turku in summer time. It begins to sail in the beginning of May and stops when ice comes. It goes regularly to Moomin Valley, too.

There is also a bus line to connect Turku to major cities as we to the smaller neighboring cities as Naantali, Hanko and other cities in the south west of Finland.

If you are already in Finland, then the easiest way to get to Turku is by train. There are many daily trains from Helsinki and Tampere and the trip take less then 2 hours.
