Gathering mushrooms

by Leipzig

Autumn is time of blueberries and mushrooms. After some rainy days mushrooms grow in an impressive speed. You do not have to look for mushrooms - just go in the woods and within 20min you have two or three baskets full of the best pieces of "Birkenpilze, Rotkappen, Maronen und Steinpilze". Well, I just know the German names of the mushrooms, if you know the English terms please drop me a line.

Autumn in Lapland

by Leipzig

Autumn starts in Lapland in August. Leaves turn to spectacular colours like yellow, orange, brown and red. Weather is like German November - days can be warm (~10°C / 50°F) but at night temperatures can drop below freezing point. This indicate a very important advantage: the first frost means the end of mosqitos!

Camping and grilling

by Leipzig

Camping in Lapland's wilderness is great! Along the strees are numerous parking lots. Here you can stop, built up your tent and make a campfire. Near Inari it stopped raining and we bought right away some meat to grill. The wood was too wet for a campfire so we had to rely on my grill.

Erätupa - Lodging out there some where

by sinoda

Erätupa - another great institution in Finland - Lapland. There are midst in the wilderness cottages which are free for use for anybody - at no charge. Of course you expect no electricity, no tapped (warm) water, no materasses...In short - the only thing you are provided with are a roof over your head and a stove to be heaten up with wood... no extra luxuryand that is perfect like that.

Laavu - semi-covered fireplaces

by sinoda

In all finnish national parks and many other nature areas you find these fireplaces built by local bureaus of the Land and Forest department. This is a nery clever institution of saving both nature and you, dear hiker. Dry wood is always supplied. Everybody is entitled to use these fireplaces. On this very fireplace we had our first encounter with a Siberian jay - a bird. They are not afraid of people and will eagerly any crums you leave them...

White snow and long nights

by Jarra

You really can find your peace of mind in silent Lapland! The Midnight Sun Film Festival is organised in every June in Sodankyla, 130 km up to north from Polar Circle. It is amazing that you can watch films 24 hours a day without noticing whether it's day or night. Light summer night are really spectacular in Lapland! Also famous movie directors, for example Francis Ford Coppola, have visited in the Film Festival and been astonished of Lapland.

Reindeers

by Gili_S

Where ever you will hang around in Lapland there will be lots of reindeers around. It is not surprising at all that this animal becomes the symbolic animal of Lapland.
