Kilpisjärvi Things to Do

  • Go hiking to other trails

This region is one of my favourite in Finland and in the north in general. It is just fantastic for hiking and there are many interesting trails, some are short and some are longer. Check the link including here for more details.

  • Go hiking to Mount. Saana

Mountain Saana is just by the hiking & camping centre, it has a trek to climb up which is very interesting as you start almost down by the lake in the valley and climb all the way up. At first there is still in the forest but soon after that stage it is starting climbing and as higher you go the colder it gets and the wind blowing harder. I had...

Kilpisjärvi Restaurants

  • Self cooking

Being on the road and on camping site I prefer to do my own cooking. However, I thought I will manage to get a fresh fish up here but I did not, so, again, traditional sausages and some cold beer were on the menu.

  • Coffee Shop

There is a large coffee shop and cafeteria here where you can stop over and have something small to eat of a full meal. Do not expect for anything special, even that it looks like in the wilderness, it is just the usual menu here.

To explorer this area you will need to walk, there is no public transportation to the mountaintop, so put of your best shoes, take some water and go out to the nature.

  • Drive

Best way to get here is of course by your own car, there are lots of things to see on the way but you will have to be careful with the reindeer on the road, so drive carefully.

There is a tourist shop also here, I thought being in the upper north more close to the nature I might find good barging here, but no way, it all looks like price system here, exactly the same rip off as any other place in Lapland :)

Besides getting frozen here, maybe the only danger thing is to have a road accident with the reindeer, so be careful with the reindeers on the road as there are many of them and you will see them everywhere.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: No need to mention, if you are here in the winter or summer you will need to have with you your best shoes, good hiking shoes or any climbing shoes will be the best. After all, this area here is one of the greatest one for hiking in northern Europe.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: In the local stores and gas station you can buy mosquitoes repellent etc. You will surely need it in the summer and just for the information, the mosquitoes here are twice the size of mosquitoes which are for instance in the southern Europe region.

Photo Equipment: Be sure to have it with you.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Good sleeping bag, unfortunately I used my old one here which is suitable for normal summer night in Europe, but not Lapland in the high mountains, so I was freezing at night. For the next time here I am planning to have new sleeping bag and hopefully double, this to insure that me and my girl are warm enough :)

  • The nature

The nature here is different from the usual in Finland, because of the cold and short summer the trees do not grow here much and it is party tundra. The more you climb the less plantation.
