Along the E8 road (north of Oulu city): Just 6-10 km North of Ylitornio town is the Aavasaksa sight. From the E8 road, turn right to road 930 "Raanujarventie", and after 2,5-3km turn left to "Aavasaksanvaarantie". Drive up and visit the pavilion cafe "Aavasaksan Paviljonki". Nice views up there!
Aavasaksa used to be the most famous tourist destination among the Finns a few decades ago, as many Finns from Southern Finland crowded to the Aavasaksa Hill in Midsummer night to see the Aavasaksa landscape in the Midnight Sun. It was an experience to boast about.

On the way from Ivalo to Inari there is an interesting view point to go and check it out. You need to drive off the road and up the hill for a km or so but then you will get to a high point where you can have a great view to the Inari lake and the forest around.
Although this isn't technically off the neaten path, I didn't quite know how to catagorise it.

But I had to try it....
While driving north on interstate #5 there is an unexpected sight just some kilometres before Kuusamo on you right hand side.
It sure makes you wonder when reading 500 metres before "it" the sigh saying 'Hiljainen kansa' (the quiet people).
First you notice a whole bunch of people standing in the field - just standing. Then on 2nd look you just have to laugh... go and see for yourself...
Ah, still alive I am. Every time I am outdoors - in the wilderness I mean - I am overwhelmed by the purity of nature esp. in Lapland.
The water (pic) from this natural well was so good so delicious and COLD I could have been lying there all day and have some more...
Sevettijarvi is another place far north east of Lapland, not far away from Norway and Russia. It is a great place to visit in the summer.
Madetkoski is one remote place in the far north east of the Finnish Lapland. Great place to experience the wild nature, forests and lakes.
The River Ounasjoki near the town of Kittila has wonderful sites for spending time in the wilderness, hiking, fishing and camping. It is one of the biggest rivers in Lapland.
