No tipping in Finland (but you can leave small change), Helsinki

7 Reviews  I don't actually agree with the no tipping custom. Finnish people might not tip very often, but when they do tip, they show that they liked the food, the place and the service - just like anywhere...

Autumn - picking mushrooms

by sinoda

When summer fades and darkness falls autumn takes over and musrooms raise their little hats from the soil...Now Finns like to go in the woods (k?yd? sieness?, sienest??) and pick all different sorts of those little one-footed.Have a try too, but please do check with a guide wheter a (still) living person or a book! For there are really poisenous and nasty little fungi out there. In the picture seen Boletus edulis in Latin and herkkutatti in Finnish.

How to find interesting sights and spots

by sinoda

When hiking, riding or driving in the countryside one may occasionally encounter a sign by the street called hannunvaakuna. This is an indicator that in the given direction there is a significantly interesting nature spot or culturally important location, building etc. The accompanying text is not always very clear, so you just have to go and see for yourself whether it is worth being "inspected" or not.The hannunvaakuna is an old fenno-ugric sign of protection. Finnish Kalevala koru (jewelry) has the hannunvaakuna in their assortment.

Pulla & Kahvi

by Gili_S

Statistically, Finns drinking more coffee per capita then any other nation in the world. The common coffee here is percolator coffee, everyone have the machine at home and that is the normal coffee you will get in coffee shops and bars. But these days you can get nice cappuccinos and cafe au lait as well.Pulla is cardamom type of pastry, it is not original for Finland but it is very common here.

Mushrooming

by Leipzig

Autumn is time of mushrooms. After some rainy days mushrooms grow in an impressive speed. You do not have to look for mushrooms - just go in the woods and within 20min you have two or three baskets full of the best pieces of "Birkenpilze, Rotkappen, Maronen und Steinpilze". Well, I just know the German names of the mushrooms, if you know the English terms please drop me a line.

Beer

by Leipzig

Beer, as well as all other kinds of alcohol, is extremely expensive in Finland due to a high tax on alcohol. I had to pay almost five Euros (6 US$) for a bottle of this elixier :-DIt would be better to import some alcohol or just to do without it.

Camping and grilling

by Leipzig

Camping in Lapland's wilderness is great! Along the strees are numerous parking lots. Here you can stop, built up your tent and make a campfire. Near Inari it stopped raining and we bought right away some meat to grill. The wood was too wet for a campfire so we had to rely on my grill.
