Finnish countryside

by FinElina

When visiting Finland, don't just go with the flow and go see all the tourist traps. If you have more time, go for example visit some real Finnish countryside! It's as most beautiful in summertime, when you can smell the woods, the trees, the grass and even the animals! You don't even need to go far from Helsinki; driving north from Helsinki (heading for Lahti, using the motorway) you easily get a glimpse of the countryside. Driving further, for example to Vääksy (commune of Asikkala, near Lahti) you get a nice view of Finnish landscapes. The forests are so beautiful! Feel the silence, fresh air, greenness all around you and wave to the cows, horses and lambs on the fields.

Bothnia Bay

by magor65

This place at the very end of Bothnia Bay may seem nothing special. Just the sea and red granite rocks, the sound of waves and wind, and no human beings as far as the eye can see. But it made a lasting impression on me. I still can remember this feeling as if for a second this place belonged only to me.

Nuuksio - National Park

by sinoda

Nuuksio is a the acclaimed National Park of the area of greater Helsinki. It's said that is the backyard of nearly one million people. Here Helsinkians come on weekends or even week-evenings to walk, wander or camp etc. for it is only less than a half an hours drive from the city centre of Helsinki away - west of Helsinki.

Naantali

by magor65

Naantali is a picturesque little port town. It has a nice marina with lots of cafes and restaurants, a unique old town with wooden architecture, but first of all it is famous for its Moomin World. It's full of characters known to both children and adults from the books by Tove Jansson.

Lahti

by magor65

Everybody must have heard of Lahti - the place of great skiing events. I have always imagined that it is situated among high mountains (forgive me my ignorance). I had to come to Finland to find out that there aren't any high mountains there. But the ski jumps are imposing (perhaps they don't look so in the picture). It was nice to stand at the observatory terrace and recall the jumps of Adam Malysz. The ski jumps are used all year long; in low season just for trainings.

Hollola

by magor65

Hollola is a picturesque little village with a beautiful church, one of the oldest in Finland. It comes from 15th century. This stone and brick church looks very nice with the green of grass and trees around. But it's the interior that is really worth seeing. You can admire there splendid star vaults, old frescos and sculptures from 15th century. The belfry is relatively new - it comes from the first half of 19th century and was designed by Carl Engel.Hollola is about 10 km from Lahti

Midsummer Night (Juhannus in Finnish)

by Pomska

If you are visiting Finland in the Midsummer, you should absolutely experience the Midsummer Night. The picture is taken from me (age about 5-6) when I was smelling the white rose which usually flowers in the Midsummer.Bonfires will be lit across Finland in the Midsummer night and most Finns rush to the countryside to celebrate Midsummer.Midsummer is also a time for love and there are many magic tricks to secure your lover. For example, a young woman collects seven different kinds of flowers, puts them under her pillow, and sees her future husband in her dreams. :-) Believe it or not!

Vappu (a kind of students' and workers' festival)

by Pomska

Vappu is held on the 30th of April. Everyone is drinking and celebrating and you can truly experience Finnish carneval! If the weather is fine, Finns usually spend the whole day outdoors having a picnic, enjoying the company of friends and eating the Vappu specialities (which cannot translated into English) such as sima and tippaleipä.You´ll see more Finns than you ever thought possible wearing white student caps (graduation cap). There's the “capping” (with a white student's cap) of the statue of Havis Amanda in Helsinki's Market Square.

Bengtsk?r - island of the lighthouse

by sinoda

Only one and a half hour by boat from Hanko (the southern-most city of Finland). The fare is some 44e which includes a salmon soup aboard the vessel.Leaving Hanko at 10 o'clock in the morning the ship arrives at 1130 - two hours stay and then back to Hanko. You may explore the whole island, which is rather small, including the tower and the catacombs in the rock. You might even take a dip in the sea if you like to.There is even the possibility of staying over, but be sure to book in advance!
