Take a moment to contemplate

by sinoda

Go out in the woods! But go slowly, use prepared paths and respect nature and you will encounter mindblowing phenomena - wild and even rare animals, dark green forests and all of a sudden a dazzling lake amidst untouched nature, just beautiful spots. Finland's pure nature WILL overwhelm you, for sure. Just take your time, get the right gear, a guide maybe and begin changing your life.

Swimming in a frozen lake!

by empbu

Believe it or not, it is said to be good for your health. :) No chance to ever see me in that VERY cold water, but all the people I know who have tried it say that the feeling afterwards is fantastic.

beautiful snow covered nature...

by nathasha

beautiful snow covered nature is everywhere, it is lovely just to walk outside or go on a skiing tour...here the sun is setting behind the forests already at two o'clock in the afternoon, so be sure to make it home in time, so you won't become a xmas meal for the wolves ;))) just kidding!! the wolves are actually very shy here and stay away from people.

Explore Finland by bike!...

by Hockeylady

Explore Finland by bike! Biking is a cheap way to travel and you see more than by car or train. The Finnish traffic is not dangerous and we have good cycling routes. Visit pages of Cycle Tourism in Finland: http://www.sll.fi/verkosto/pyoramatkailu/english.htm

Every visitor to Finland...

Every visitor to Finland should enjoy a Sauna by a lake. This sauna is about 1 hour from Tampere, and on this cold, rainy afternoon, we had a refreshing sauna, followed by a dip in the cold lake nearby, we did this several times.A beer was enjoyed between trips to the cold. In the sauna, we hit ourselves with birch branches. Please all try this once in your lives. And to be authentic, be naked also!!!!!!!!!

Rent yourself a summer...

by Sarppa

Rent yourself a summer cottage! It should be pretty easy because there is a lot of cottages in Finland. But don't even try it in the end of June when all the cottages are booked for people celebrating the Mid Summer. Try www.lomarengas.fi where you can find cottages and do an online booking.

by Sarppa

Our national sport is pesäpallo (nest ball) which is almost the same as the traditional baseball. You might wanna see a game if you happen to visit a place where it's played. For some reasons pesäpallo isn't very popular in Helsinki and it's surroundings so first you have to find a place to see it. Try some smaller towns. I don't know about the costs but it can't be very expensive..

by Sarppa

Ahvenanmaa (Aland) is the little island between Finland and Sweden. It's a part of Finland but it has it's own autonomy and mostly people speak Swedish there. More or less you feel like beeing abroad when you go there. It is a VERY beautiful island and the best way to get around there is by bike. If leaving the main island you may have to take some ferries between the smaller island. You can get to Aland from Finland by boats (Silja and Viking Line) which leave either from Helsinki or Turku. Or as well you can go there from the continental and use the smaller ferries between the small island.

Boat tour in Joensuu on Lake Pyhäselkä. Extremely beautiful scenery of lakes and forests and islands. Stop at Island of Secrets, there use to be a hidden treasure there today you find the best berries you could imagine. Warning: mind the wind on the boat - it blew away my favourite baseball cap and I'll never see it again.

Vappu, first of May. (see the other off the beaten path)Student's in universities and in institutes of higher education have taken this festival as their own. Student's wear overalls with decoration.(Different colored overalls tell where the student's study)In the evening, every year at 6 o'clock there always happens a tradition as the students put a hat(white graduation hat) on a statue called Havis Amanda. This statue is close to the market place, next to Esplanad park. At that time the place is very crowded. If you don't get close enough - you can also see it from tv.
