Vappu, First of May, is a much celebrated day in Finland.(notice, we celebrate it the last day/night of April) It used to be celebration of the working class, but it has become a celebration of students. Sima, is homemade, nonalcoholic drink we drink at first of May. We also eat this pastry called Tippaleipä. It doesn't taste so much.. but it's a tradition, and it looks funny! Most people get drunk, go to restaurants or hang in the streets of Helsinki.Balloons are very popular... (more about student vappu-happenings see other off the beaten path)

At the end of February the students in the Finnish sixth form have their 'Vanhat tanssit'. The students who became the oldest in school celebrate this by having a big ball. The dresses are old, or ancient.(picture) If you happen to be in Finland in February ask around..

Throwing the boot. It´s funny Finnish summertradition. I don´t know the history.. Main idea is to throw the boot as far as you can, but it has to go into certain direction(a sector). There are also competitions in this humor game(even world champion ships.) It is usually played at summertime, in the countryside (summercabins).

WIFE CARRYING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, 2001 AT SONKAJÄRVI. It's true..The idea of the Wife Carrying Competition is Sonkajärvi’s very own and, in spite of its humorous aspects, it has deep roots in the local history. I heard the prices are great! The picture is from the water obstacle.

This is something very extra ordinary: Avantouinti, as the feat of swimming in a hole in a frozen lake is called in Finland, may not be suitable for beginners. It is mostly practiced by real veterans of the sauna. The younger generation (mine) has lost the courage, or gained more common sense.

Snowcastle in Kemi, Lapland.(Biggest in the world) It's vast, beautiful and interesting. There's a hotel (out of snow of course), a ecumenical chapel(you can get married there), restaurant, reindeer rides, husky rides, winter swimming through a hole in the ice, snowmobile rides... but most of all, it is a beautiful snowcastle, worth seeing! It has wwwpages:www.snowcastle.net

Berry picking!Woods are full of berries;blueberries, lingonberries(also known as cloudberries), rasberries, wildstrawberries. Everyone has the right to go picking berries in the woods, one just has to remember to be polite, and not to pick them from someone's garden.

I don´t really know what most people comes and sees in Finland...It´s probably Helsinki or Lapland...My advise would to go and visit the country...like Karjala or if you don´t want to go so long from Helsinki the country is right outside in Uusimaan lääni (former)...In itä-uusimaa you can rent a house and live without anybody disturbing you...In itä-uusimaa there is also a sight called Kings road after the swedish king who travelled along it...you can for example vistit Strömfors Ruotsinpyhtää in finnish (www.ruotsinpyhtaa.fi, only in finnish and swedish but if you click on strömfors-ruotsinpyhtään ruukinalue there is some information in english...)
