Paltaniemi is a small town with a harbour, a few old churches and a pleasant atmosphere. It is only a short distance from Kajaani if you have a car or a bicycle. I unfortunatly had to rely on public transport, and the bus didn't go on Sundays (although I think it does go in the main season).
Walking takes long, and if you don't walk through the woods and some backroads (which of course makes it an even longer trip) it is very boring along the highway. I have been walking through backroads and the woods. On my way back I got lost in the woods, and kept walking circles. Maybe it is a good idea to find a map, and bring it along if you go walking.
