Kalajoki Things to Do

  • Maakalla,fishermans island

From Kalajoki venesatama (boat-harbour) goes tuesday to sunday at summer a boat to Maakalla. It usually goes at 15 o´clock and at July also at 12 o´clock. It´s a small village on island, where is more sunny days than in maincountry. They have been able to use their own laws since 1720, when king of Sweden (witch Finland was part of then) gave them...

  • Sand beach

The best this in this place is the beach of course. One of the unique as it is a sand beach here and if you are lucky and there is sunshine as well you can hardly believe that you are only few hundreds of kilometres from the Arctic Circle.

Kalajoki Restaurants

  • ABC-asema, Kalajoki

Well, as you are not exactly in the city, one of the best places around here is actually the gas station restaurant, store, fast food burger, coffee shop, toilet and whatever you might need for your Nordic tour. In photo 2 for example you can see my breakfast snack of Finnish coffee with blueberry cake.

  • Morning coffee

In the forest there are no cappuccinos, so I do have my own set just to make the traditional Mediterranean black coffee before you hit the road again.

  • Camp cooking

On a road trip sometimes the best food & drinks is what you find in the store and cook it yourself. Of course its important to have someone to share it with you and verify the chef qualities ;)

I was here on early July, the nights were total white and the mosquitoes were the size of the dragonflies, so the best and safe activity were in my cosy tent, after few drinks of course ;-)

Visiting here less then a month after Dune 45 I must admit that the dunes here are not really impressive, but in a local terms of sun and sand, they are nice and interesting, so you should take a walk to see the dunes around here as well.

Favorite thing: Large sandy beaches of the Gulf of Bothnia in Kalajoki are very popular, especially around midsummer.

Fondest memory: JukuJukuMaa is worth a visit. The rides and other activities are fun but not too wild and therefore it is especially suitable for families with smaller children. However, kids - regardless of age - love it!
