Oulun Kauppahalli on the market square is a traditional Finnish collection of small shops selling special foods, souveniers and other interesting items. The shops or stalls are along two corridors and the place is pleasant for a short stroll if you are in the neighbourhood. The prices are higher compared to normal shops, but the service is more personal.
There is also a decent café that sells soups and sandwiches among sweetier items.

Oulun Koru is big jewelry store in Finnish standards. All relevant brands are available from watches to jewelry and silverware.
The staff is very helpful and knows enough to answer even some of the more peculiar questions.
Oulun Koru is not for cheapskates. Finland in general is not a good place to buy jewelry, except if you are interested in Finnish design -- that is, by the way, quite unique compared to the rest of the world.
What to buy: Lapponia Jewelry has several excellent collections that portrait Finnish nature. They have both golden and silver jewelry. Karelia Koru is another brand; they have got inspiration from medieval or even older Finnish designs.

Vima: sells fashionable clothes for both ladies and gentlemen in the center of Oulu. The store is conveniently located on Rotuaari, just next to Stockmann. In fact, you can walk from Vima: to Stockmann without even noticing that you have moved from a store to another. Just remember to pay your purchases first...
The first floor has male fashion and shoes, the second floor is for ladies, the third has Benetton and Sisley shop-in-shop and the fourth floor hosts a cafe.
The garments are designated mostly for young urban people, but you can find the basic suits and other paraphelia there, too. The prices are normal Finnish street prices, so no bargains can usually be found.

Located at Oulu City Art Museum, museum shop Ainoa sells things you might not find anywhere else in Oulu. It is a small shop and therefore hasn't things like department stores, but if you are walking in Ainola park or in this old industrail district, I suggest visiting here. Just check out what they have there and maybe buy some nice cards.
They do have many art books, posters, cards and cute little things which are just fascinating. It is not something you necessarily need, but just for fun:)

I'm not fancy big gold rings or ear rings. I prefer silver and it haven't even be made of it, at least it is nickel free. This cute jewelry store is propably the best in Finland. It's not expensive att all, but there are wonderful wonderful things. I just go mad everytime when I visit there. And, it's located on my home street...
If you prefer more good looking rings, not just expensive looking ones, go to this shop. But I did warn you...
What to buy: Toe ring, ear ring, crown...everything. This is a must for all girls and for boys whom are fancy for jewelry.
What to pay: from couple of euros to 40.

The markets are not open on Sundays here in Finland. There are few Sundays in year that all the shops are allowed to be open, but usually most of them are not. That's sad, but this has been political issue since last few years here. It's sometimes hard to find food on Sunday, specially in Oulu, if you don't feel junkie food -day. But there are some stores that are open, and here are two of them:
Valintalo, located in Heinäpää, about 1,5 kilometer from Center, address is Puistokatu 26 and it's open from 12-21
Rimi, Uusikatu 22, located in center, just nearby Otto Karhi's park.

They window looked so appealing. Everything in this shop was arranged by colour. I thought it was a stationary shop but it proved to be quite big. Also had toys and household stuff like plastic bags and plastic kitchenware or plant pots. As long as it had colour.
What to buy: I was able to resist. Just bought 2 big safety pins (the ones you put on a kilt) to be able to hang up the Dutch flag on the balcony of our hotelroom (facing the patio, not the street, mind you!).
What to pay: The pins were € 0,17 each.

The locals described Stockmann as the best department store in Finland. It was first in Helsinki but they seemed quite proud in Oulu to have one there too.
They have everything from fashion to books, from supermarket to interior design, from kitchenware to sporting articles... about 4 or 5 storeys high.
What to buy: Well, I am a sucker for design. Scandinavian...
So I saw this beautiful stainless steel cheese knife (of the Finnish brand Hackman) in Rovaniemi but didn't buy it. I came across it again in Stockmann, Oulu and it just smiled at me and said: BUY ME! So I did for just over € 38. It's design after all...
Then I bought some special aluminium bags for barbecue and oven. Eight pieces at € 1.90 each. You can put meat, fish or vegs in it and then it comes out, not cooked but smoked. I've yet to try it out.
What to pay: Cheese knife € 38 and a bit
Alu bags for smoking food: € 1.90 each

Most people have a sauna at home in Finland. But I do too, at home. So I bought two towels here which had SAUNA weaved into the fabric. They were towels but the fabric was more like a drying cloth than a bathing towel. Pretty handy eh?
What to buy: Everything for the sauna (pronounce SAUOONA, and stretch it a little).
What to pay: I paid € 5.40 per towel which I found a bit expensive.
