Perhaps the most impressive building in Oulu is the town hall. The Neo-Renaissance building was built in 1886, right after the big fire which destroyed most parts of Oulu, including the old town hall.

Rotuaari is the name of the pedestrian street in the centre of Oulu. At a square on this street is this interesting monument. This glassy ball was designed by Seppo Valjus and is a very good meeting point.

Due to a poor city center, at least Oulu has a nice big market square. In summer you could find the outdoor market almost everyday, and many terrasses tohave a drink. In winter it is more quiet, but the architecture of typical wooden houses make this part of the city very nice. The picture shows ice statues from last winter, and there was an ice rink as well in the middle. In the yellow houses you can find souvenirs shops with Lappish handcrafts.

If you travel to Oulu between June and September, you may see these wonderful fountain lights top of the sea, next to Merikoski bridges. About one kilometer from downtown=)
It's quite bright on July, so lights look better when it darker, like on August.

Shopping, watching people, eating
The pleasant feeling is almost touchable when sitting for a while in the market square. You can get local handycraft or biodynamically grown strawberries. See old storerooms next to brand new Meritulli neigbourhod.

Go for a picnic to Nallikari beach
Very nice beach with lots of young and good looking people with very few clothes :) Almost always a pleasure just to visit the place.
You may go and play the beach volley or throw frisbee with your friends... everything you can do at the most of the great beaches. There is in/outdoor restaurant 100 metres from waterline and possibility to change your clothes in several indoorcabins. There is also one big Bath/Hotel Eden at right next to Nallikari Beach.

Sauna.
All over the world the sauna is known to be one of the best forms of relaxation. Nowadays saunas are found in almost every country, but they are never quite the same as in Finland, where there are about 1.6 million saunas - approximately one for every three inhabitants. The sauna is part of the Finnish way of life, in fact, the word itself is Finnish. Saunas are found everywhere; in private homes, as well as in hotels, holiday villages and camping sites. Finns think of saunas not so much as a luxury, but as a necessity, and after trying a few saunas you will probably agree.
SO GOOD.

If you're not a Finn, you probably haven't heard of pesäpallo. It's a Finnish version of baseball which was 'invented' in 1922 by Lauri Pihkala. Maybe the biggest difference to baseball is that pitching is done vertically which makes the game faster and more tactical. If you're in Oulu during summertime, you may want to check if Oulun Lippo is playing.
More information of the game

Address: The pesäpallo-stadium is in Raksila.
Oulu Cathedral located in the city centre is about 200 years old and very beautiful one. This time in the heat of the summer I did not go in.

When you have a look at the nice park and gardens on Hupisaari you can have a stop at the nice cafe 'Tuomenkukka' in one of the glas houses. You can either sit outside or inside.
