I love food! by Elena_blue Kiosks at Helsinki kauppatori, specialised in seafood. Eat here different fish -I don't know the names-, salmon fillet, paellas, roasted vegetables and may be reindeer (strong taste-smell, I don't like it). I payed for example 5 Euros for a portion of fried whitefish which was my favorite. The kiosks were there every day from morning to 5 o'clock in the afternoon during my summer stay. Probably not in winter.
My favorite was the fried whitefish, but don't hesitate: Take a full plate with different things and decide for your best. Alternative: come here every day you spend in Helsinki and try a different food every day! kagone by sinoda Hotel & Restaurant K?g?ne is built in traditional Karelian style and located next to a lake. It's a delightful experience after several stops at impersonal roadside cafes and gas stations. The restaurant (both a la carte and buffet) offers Finnish and Karelian specialities. There is a also a self service cafe. There are also some rooms available (46-64 e). Enjoy the beautiful surroundings (if you can ignore the highway right in front), hiking and cross-country skiing trails 3 - 50 km, and sauna and swimming facilities. Don't worry too much about the right pronounciation of the name. Most Finns have trouble with it too! If you want to give it a try, just say kae-goe-neh. Savotta restaurant, Helsinki by Elena_blue This place is a very good option for local food. In summer it has an inner yard like patio which is nice and cosy. The winter inside rooms are medieval atmospheric-but not my favourite, I feel clistophobic in such places. On the menu you will find different local dishes such as reindeer and fish of different types. Not sure what was it but this is never a problem when tasting new things.
Although a cosy place I did not enjoy food - and believe me it happens rarely! I m afraid that finnish food taste does not suit me well. But again this is personal. I have to say thank you to the guys working to the restaurant, because when they saw my plate untouched, they brought me a variety of different other things (not sure what exactly, the names), which were tasty and finally I left the restaurant not that hungry! Nasinneula Observation Tower (168 m) in Tampere by finlandia The rotating restaurant is in the Näsinneula Observation Tower at the height of 124 meters. From there you see a very wonderful panorama over the city, many lakes, forests and ridges dating back to the Ice Age!

- Rye bread ('ruisleipä'). The best (and only real?) bread there is. There are many different rye breads. Be careful if you aren't use to it, since too much rye bread can cause some gas into your stomach. - Karelian pasty ('karjalanpiirakka'). Actually more bread than a pasty. - Pea soup ('hernekeitto'). Looks totally horrible. Tastes good - or at least I think so. There are actually people who like it and people who really hate it. Even better if you can get it smoke flavoured. - Pancake. Ok there are pancakes as "usual" pancakes (or crepes), which in Finnish are called 'ohukainen' or more unofficially but more commonly 'lätty'. A little bit better version is the ones made outside with BIG frying pan - known as 'muurinpohjalätty'. And then there is this what in Finnish is called 'pannukakku', which is a direct translation from the word 'pancake'. It is much thicker thing baked in the oven, and tastes a bit different too. Pancakes are usually consumed with some jam - most preferably with homemade jam made from Finnish (straw)berries. ;-) - Cloudberries ('lakka' or 'hilla'). These yellow berries can be found from northern Finland - and from some markets. Might be little bit expensive and taste a bit "different", but not bad at all. Just mentioned here because I think you can't find them in many countries after all. - Salmiac ('salmiakki'). Black sweet, which could be expected to be like liquorice, but it isn't :) One of those "traditional" things (along with rye bread and Fazer's Blue 'Fazerin sininen' Chocolate - which is NOT blue coloured) Finns miss when they are abroad. - 'Koskenkorva' or 'kossu'. The most "traditional" Finnish alcohol drink. Strong (38%) alcohol which tastes quite horrible. Sometimes I'm able to drink it, but I try to avoid it in any possible way. Nevertheless has been quite popular propably as long as it has existed. Can be drunk straight or with some add-ons. The traditional way is perhaps drinking straight from the bottle as long as it lasts... See also http://www.kossu.org Leave a Comment

My own original Cafe Latte & Pulla. by Gili_S Bakeries are not so common in Finland as in central Europe, it is hard to find good one and the big companies & cartels make most backing products. However, there are few unique places where you can try special things, in market places or small private cafes. Bakery products are much related also for the seasons, special cakes are made only in certain times, winter is more creamy and sugary and summer the more of the forest fruity type. Great summer pies & cakes are made with blueberries, blackberries, redberries, cranberries, cloudberries, raspberries etc. Also try other salty pies as Lihapiirakka, Lortsy, Karelian pie etc. they can suits well as small snacks. I listed cafes on my cities pages.
In the winter, usually on February it is common to have Laskiaispulla which is my favourite. Leave a Comment Theme: Bakery

This is about restaurants in general. A very sympathetic gesture in Finland is that all restaurants that I went to had special signs beside every menu item stating if it was gluten or lactose free (there was a third but I forgot that one, maybe gluten AND lactose free). Even the trucker's café's by the highways had those. Leave a Comment Theme: Local

by nathasha in xmas the children are playing while mummy is preparing the xmas food :)) the typical xmas meal consists of three parts, cold and warm starters, warm main dish, and the cheese, the fruit and other sweet stuff for dessert. the starters are mainly fish, different kinds of herring, salmon, and a cooked fish called 'lipeakala', which has a funny texture :)) you eat it with white sauce and peppar. there is also a traditional colourful salad called 'rosolli' that refers to vineagred beetroot, carrots, onion and pickles. the main course is usually ham or turkey, but as i don't eat meat, i eat some vegetable patee and fish. this you eat with three kinds of oven baked purees: potato puree, rice&carrot puree, and rutabaga (swedish turnip) puree. homemade lingonberry (puolukkahillo) jam is accompanied :) the typical xmas bread is spicy and sweet (limppu). for dessert you have different kinds of cheese, one of the best is a blue cheese called 'aurajuusto' which refers to the river aura in turku :)) (see my turku page) another great cheese is 'leipajuusto' which is warmed in the oven and eaten with cloudberry jam - truly yummy!!! for desert you will also be offered a sweet plum pudding with cream, and different warm pastries with plum jam and some spicy cakes with cinnamon and syrup :)) oh gotta stop writing this now, i became hungry, and there is still 6 months to xmas!!!!
