WINE IS EXPENSIVE!

by WardrobeMK

One thing that will shock you in Finland is the prize of wine (and indeed other alcoholic drinks) in restaurants!I've just returned from a holiday (I'm a Finn but have lived in the UK for 25 years) and the cheapest I came across (and not just in Helsinki) was about 25 Euro for a bottle of house wine. I hadn't been back there since 2005 and the prices were a bit of a surprise! The 25 Euro bottle is in fact the cheapest I saw, then it was 30, 32, 35 etc etc.A 12 cl (small!) glass of house wine is about 4.60-5.00 EuroI'm not talking about fancy restaurants (Lord only knows how much the wine is in those!) but your average High Street "Mexican" or local eateries. You can buy a decent bottle of wine in "Alko", the government booze shop (alcohol more than 5% (I think) is not sold in supermarkets or kiosks) for about 5-7 Euro but the strict Finnish alcohol laws forbid you bringing your own wine...

Micro-brewerys around Finland: Are you interested on beers?

by Turska

We are "beer-people",and like to try different kinds of beers. So when travlling anywhere,we try to find micro-brewerys.At homeland there is quite many.and their beers are much better than big brewerys beers.I hardly like any big brands made in Finland, but from these small ones we´ve found some much better. For example at Turku, panimoravintola Koulu (micro-brewery School, made inside old school, and it looks as one too!) they have quite good dark beer! And at Tampere local Plevna has won competions with their beers, their stout for example. You will found Plevna-tips at Tampere-page.At the link here, you will found most of micro-brewerys in Finland.

If you are allergic: General

by Turska

If you are allergic,Finland is a perfect place to eat out.Every possible allergic is taken seriously,if you just tell what you are allergic of.I thought before, that it is like that in every country, but now I have been told it isn´t so.In allmost all restaurants you will find non-lactose,low-lactose and glutein-free marks at menu.If you have something else, feel free to tell.I have heard from my clients(I don´t run a restaurant, but I hear lot of stories about them from my work) that for example one had child, who couldn´t eat other meats than moose,wild-pig and some other rare ones, and no rice, gluteins and so on-list was huge, that when they went to restaurant, they asked only mashed potatos for the child.Weither asked why,and when he heard the reason,he asked the mother to write down what the daughter could eat,and after that she made lovely portion, made just for her. That 5year old was so...

For example:glutein-free pizza is served everywher

Savotta: Local food in a cosy yard

by Elena_blue

This place is a very good option for local food. In summer it has an inner yard like patio which is nice and cosy. The winter inside rooms are medieval atmospheric-but not my favourite, I feel clistophobic in such places. On the menu you will find different local dishes such as reindeer and fish of different types. Not sure what was it but this is never a problem when tasting new things. Although a cosy place I did not enjoy food - and believe me it happens rarely! I m afraid that finnish food taste does not suit me well. But again this is personal. I have to say thank you to the guys working to the restaurant, because when they saw my plate untouched, they brought me a variety of different other things (not sure what exactly, the names), which were tasty and finally I left the restaurant not that hungry!
