Kiosks in the Helsinki kauppatori: Best and cheapest food in Helsinki

by Elena_blue

Kiosks at Helsinki kauppatori, specialised in seafood. Eat here different fish -I don't know the names-, salmon fillet, paellas, roasted vegetables and may be reindeer (strong taste-smell, I don't like it). I payed for example 5 Euros for a portion of fried whitefish which was my favorite. The kiosks were there every day from morning to 5 o'clock in the afternoon during my summer stay. Probably not in winter. My favorite was the fried whitefish, but don't hesitate: Take a full plate with different things and decide for your best. Alternative: come here every day you spend in Helsinki and try a different food every day!

Food and restaurants in Finland

by Gili_S

I indicate restaurants in cities pages. In most places there is menu in English, outside the big cities and in small places they don?t. Ask the waitresses for details. You might order something that in the end you wouldn?t touch. But anyhow, Finnish food is simple and tasteless, so there are not many risks. How ever, there are still few dishes that are very much recommended.1. Salmon/Rainbow trout (Lohi/Kirjolohi). Best to have it fried or in the oven, but there is also Salmon soup, Salmon sandwich, Salmon salad, Salmon Pie and smoked salmon. To my taste, Salmon is a sure success; it is always fresh and unique for visitors.2. Reindeer (Poro). Usually as steak or grilled. Must try it, never mind the cost, once in a lifetime. There is also smoked reindeer that you can buy in the market or stores.3. Pike perch (Kuha) or perch (Ahven). these are relatively expensive fishes in restaurants,...

Fish Market: Dont Miss it

Self-Catering

by AnnaLupilla

Every town has a kauppatori (market square) where you can buy smoked fish, fresh produce (in season), berries, pastries and the like. Most larger towns also have a kauppahallo (covered market) where stalls sell cheap hot meals, sandwiches, meats, cheese, produce etc.The main supermarket chains include K-Kauppa, T-Market and S-Market. Discount stores include Alepa, Eurospar, Rabatti, Säästäri and Siwa.Relatively cheap food for a simple meal includes yogurt, eggs, fresh or smoked fish and hernekeitto. Salmon can be bought at reasonable prices, cheese, salami and meat are more expensive. Don’t forget to check out Stockmann’s food stall when in Helsinki!!!

Fast Food

by AnnaLupilla

The grilli is the venue for take-away meal of hamburgers or hot dogs for under € 3.50. It’s usually little more than a roadside stand, with or without few seats. Hamburgers are usually a meat patty between two bits of flat bread and squashed to pancake dimension under a hot iron. Turkish kebab joints offer good value (around 5€), and inexpensive pizzerias, where you can often buy by the slice, are ubiquitous. McDonald’s has hit Finland in a big way (the world’s northernmost McDonald’s restaurant is in Rovaniemi), but local chain, Hesburger (originally from Turku) certainly holds its own.Although you wouldn’t immediately think to go to a petrol station or bus terminal for dinner, in Finland these are perfectly respectable places to get a quick, hot, nutritious and cheap meal, particularly between towns.

in Finland: Cafés & Restaurants

by AnnaLupilla

Finns obviously have well and truly adopted the European café culture, particularly in cities like Helsinki, Tampere and Turku, but also in smaller towns. Most of them serve snacks, light meals and desserts as well as coffee – and lots of it. Finns drink more coffee per capita than any other people on earth and there’s usually a self-service pot of coffee permanently sitting on a warmer near the counter. A kahvila is a simple café, a kahvio is a café inside a supermarket or petrol station, and a baari serves snacks, beer and soft drinks, and probably also coffee.Restaurant meals can be expensive in Finland, particularly at dinner. Take advantage of the weekday lunchtime specials, where you can enjoy a buffet meal for under € 10. Many cheaper restaurants in Finland close their kitchens around 5 pm. Large towns have an increasing number of international or ethnic restaurants, and these may...

In general: Food

by AnnaLupilla

Finnish food has some elements of both Swedish and Russian cuisines. Originally it was designed to nourish a peasant population who did outdoor manual work in cold weather, Consequently, Finnish food was heavy and fatty, made of fish, game, meat, milk and dairy products, oats, barley and dark rye in the form of porridges and bread, with few spices other than salt and pepper. Vegetables were rarely used in everyday meals, except in casseroles. Potato was the staple food, served with various fish or meat sauces. So what’s modern Finnish cuisine like? Well, little has changed, except that international cuisine has also made it to Finland. Soups such as pea, meat, cabbage, and even carrot casseroles, are served as the main course or as part of it. Fish dishes – prepared from whitefish, Baltic herring, salmon and trout – are common everywhere.Reindeer is said to be commonly found on the menu...
