The train compartment in the market hall: Another great cafe idea - Turku

by sabsi

Inside the market hall (Kauppahalli) of Turku there is a beautiful and very unique cafe which we found by accident. The furniture, windows etc are taken from an old train!! It's beautiful. This is a typical Finnish self service cafe. So grab yourself a cup of coffee and a "pulla" and enjoy being on a train going nowhere.

Zetor: Touristy ... but fun - Helsinki

by sabsi

Zetor is a wild and wonderful place in Helsinki which is hard to describe. Invented by the Leningrad Cowboys this place looks "real" countryside Finland. With lots of wood and tractors - hence the name Zetor which is a tractor factory. The design is amazing, a real Leningrad Cowboys style! You can dance, drink or dine here - or then all of this. The food is Finnish mixed with Russian and very very nice actually. Even reading the menu is a great laugh! Unfortunately this place is a bit on the expensive side. Paid 5.70€ for a Lonkero here which was a bit shocking. Food is expensive too but once you get used to the food prices in Helsinki it doesn't shock you any longer ;)At the weekend it's supposed to be terrible here, but I've been there on an evening during the week twice and it was nice. There's loads of tourists here anytime though. You can buy Zetor and Leningrad Cowboys Merchandise...

Carrols: In memoriam

by sabsi

Carrols is the Finnish McDonalds. But it's better and cheaper!!! Unfortunately Carrols was bought by Hesburger, the other Finnish McDonalds and therefore there's only a few restaurants left :( Chickenburger Meal and the free and tasty Ketchup!!! The trick is to get a lot of packs of pepper and mix it with the Ketchup. HAHA Finns ;-)

Cafe Lasipalatsi: My favourite place in Helsinki

by sabsi

It's not a restaurant but a typical selfservice cafe. I love it there and everytime I have 30 minutes to spend I end up here with an ice tea and some pastry. Watch out, the smokers area in the back is the nicest to hang around, at the front it's not as comfortable! It's also excellent for people watching here as you can see the whole bus station from inside here. Very interesting - especially on midsummer weekend when everybody takes a bus to the countryside. Ice tea and pastry.

Cafe Majurska: The most beautiful cafe - Lappeenranta/Lahti

by sabsi

It's rather a cafe than a restaurant but it's absolutely amazing: The cafe Majurska at the fortress up the hill in Lappeenranta. It feels like being in a museum, at the wall there's lots of old pictures, you sit on old furniture. I love this kind of cafes and I am always happy to find one when travelling. There's another cafe like this in Lahti which is almost as nice. It's at the waterfront. The apple pie with custard was lovely. And the tea was the most delicious tea I ever had in my life.

Hotel & Restaurant K?g?ne: Refreshment by the Roadside

by sinoda

Hotel & Restaurant K?g?ne is built in traditional Karelian style and located next to a lake. It's a delightful experience after several stops at impersonal roadside cafes and gas stations. The restaurant (both a la carte and buffet) offers Finnish and Karelian specialities. There is a also a self service cafe. There are also some rooms available (46-64 e). Enjoy the beautiful surroundings (if you can ignore the highway right in front), hiking and cross-country skiing trails 3 - 50 km, and sauna and swimming facilities.Don't worry too much about the right pronounciation of the name. Most Finns have trouble with it too! If you want to give it a try, just say kae-goe-neh.

Cafes and Bakeries: Cafes and Bakeries

by Gili_S

Bakeries are not so common in Finland as in central Europe, it is hard to find good one and the big companies & cartels make most backing products. However, there are few unique places where you can try special things, in market places or small private cafes. Bakery products are much related also for the seasons, special cakes are made only in certain times, winter is more creamy and sugary and summer the more of the forest fruity type. Great summer pies & cakes are made with blueberries, blackberries, redberries, cranberries, cloudberries, raspberries etc. Also try other salty pies as Lihapiirakka, Lortsy, Karelian pie etc. they can suits well as small snacks.I listed cafes on my cities pages. In the winter, usually on February it is common to have Laskiaispulla which is my favourite.

You don't have to tip

by Scandic

The quality of restaurants as well as prices varies a lot if Finland. You may find very fancy European style restaurans in Helsinki and then in country side only auto grills and gas stations, not even McDonalds...Most restaurants have very international kitchen, which means influences from French and Italy, but as a tourist I would like to try Finnish specialities. Good choices are fresh sea food, carrot/potato dishes, meat such a moose /rabbit /reindeer, and berry desserts. This is very famous onr, I know, but because everyone wil keep serving it to you, why not bother to try? Mämmi is a Finnish Eastern food, made from rye grains, it is totally dairy and any other animal product free. Some people like to eat it with cream. I'm not a big fand of it, it is pretty sweet.

Golden RAX Pizzabuffet: All you can eat for 6,99€

Here you get a rich buffet with pasta, pizza and salad as well as non-alcoholic drinks for free.In every bigger town you find such a restaurant. This place is also very good for family with kids. First, your kids can eat as much ice cream as they want for 1,99 € (or at least until they get bellyache) and second, there is a corner with toys.
