Riipinen Game Restaurant: Wild Wild North

by musti72

This is heaven for game lovers! It's a charming wood house in the middle of the green. The specialities are bear, rabbit, birds and of course reindeer. This is really an experience if you've never tried this kind of meat before!

Koti Pizza: Finnish Pizza Connection

by musti72

Koti Pizza, which means homemade Pizza, is a Finnish franchise company that you find in the whole country. It is a good choice if you are in some hurry and/or your budget is not so high. Never had a bad pizza, I think all of them are good.

Zetor Restaurant: A finnish resto with humour?!

by s_odyssey

We were walking around the Esplanada in Helsinki, and then made our way back to the Hotel. On our way back, both our stomachs started fussing. We had to find a place that would still be open and when we did for some reason my chaperone was completely excited.I found out why very fast, the decor in the place is centered around tractors, farm animals and humurous vintage publicity ads (you will need a translator). I chose a delicious silence of the lambs (knuckle and fillet of lamb, minty red wine sauce, garlic potato and pureed carrots) and had my first and welcoming taste of Salmiakki (finnish licorice liqueur).

Mostly bought from different shops: Things you should taste in Finland

by Heinisuo

- Rye bread ('ruisleipä'). The best (and only real?) bread there is. There are many different rye breads. Be careful if you aren't use to it, since too much rye bread can cause some gas into your stomach.- Karelian pasty ('karjalanpiirakka'). Actually more bread than a pasty.- Pea soup ('hernekeitto'). Looks totally horrible. Tastes good - or at least I think so. There are actually people who like it and people who really hate it. Even better if you can get it smoke flavoured.- Pancake. Ok there are pancakes as "usual" pancakes (or crepes), which in Finnish are called 'ohukainen' or more unofficially but more commonly 'lätty'. A little bit better version is the ones made outside with BIG frying pan - known as 'muurinpohjalätty'. And then there is this what in Finnish is called 'pannukakku', which is a direct translation from the word 'pancake'. It is much thicker thing baked in the oven,...

Very sympathetic: Lactose and glutenfree

by ATLC

This is about restaurants in general.A very sympathetic gesture in Finland is that all restaurants that I went to had special signs beside every menu item stating if it was gluten or lactose free (there was a third but I forgot that one, maybe gluten AND lactose free).Even the trucker's café's by the highways had those.

The Finnish burger-chain...

by pinganille

The Finnish burger-chain 'Hesburger' can be found all over the country and is okay. There's also a great number of international restaurants but try and find one serving Finnish food - that can be a bit of a surprising experience and is really good! Smoked and dried reindeermeat served with mashed potatoes and berries.Pies of arctic berries, Karelian pastries and other kinds of baked things. Finns are masters when it comes to baking!!!

nathasha's Restaurant Tip

by nathasha

in xmas the children are playing while mummy is preparing the xmas food :)) the typical xmas meal consists of three parts, cold and warm starters, warm main dish, and the cheese, the fruit and other sweet stuff for dessert. the starters are mainly fish, different kinds of herring, salmon, and a cooked fish called 'lipeakala', which has a funny texture :)) you eat it with white sauce and peppar. there is also a traditional colourful salad called 'rosolli' that refers to vineagred beetroot, carrots, onion and pickles. the main course is usually ham or turkey, but as i don't eat meat, i eat some vegetable patee and fish. this you eat with three kinds of oven baked purees: potato puree, rice&carrot puree, and rutabaga (swedish turnip) puree. homemade lingonberry (puolukkahillo) jam is accompanied :) the typical xmas bread is spicy and sweet (limppu). for dessert you have different kinds of...

Kaivohuone: Kaivohuone

by Delan

Situated in the middle of the Kaivopuisto-park.The building itself is an old wooden manor house and looks very distinguished and antiquish.Don´t be fooled ! It is THE n.1 party spot in the city during summer, the line-up to get inside is notoriously long but it is worth it. the 'Kelkka' A simple, yet effective little coctail. Contents: 2cl.Finlandia Vodka 2cl.Passoa liquer 4cl.Fresh Orange JuiceThis drink WAS INVENTED in Helsinki, in a small but excellent bar that specializes in Finlandia Vodka. Can´t remember the name though... Someone help me!Well anyway this formula has rapidly spread through the continent to the extent that last summer in Kos (Greek Island off the coast of Turkey) it was recommended to me by greek bar-maid. Small World, eh?

Zetor - 'Restaurant and bar...

by Waoife

Zetor - 'Restaurant and bar for happy tractor drivers'Or so they claim - I'm not a tractor driver but I was pretty happy all the same after my visit here and there are loads of tractors & farm machinery to be found inside this huge bar/restaurant.Haven't been to a restaurant where a lot of the tables & chairs are bits of old farm machiner before!!!Also they let us in even though one of our group was being pushed in a supermarket trolley & even made sure the trolley was waiting for us when we were finished ;-)I don't have any photos of Zetor itself but this one shows some of the group just before we arrived there! Very reasonable food with plenty of choice & generous portions (most main courses were around €10)
