IceBear7's Restaurant Tip

by IceBear7

Every day I spent some time at the various markets and market halls, my favourite being the one just by the harbour in Helsinki - of course! Favourite stuff to eat in Finland: peas or strawberries from the market, and the great sweets you get. I tried a reindeer sandwich... nothing special. Favourite stuff to drink in Finland: Pear Cidre! Lonkero ( a gin long drink)! And coffee.

Rosso restaurants.: Rosso restaurants.

by helimaarit

They are found all over Finland. The food is great, not too expensive. One of my favourite foods there is 'katkarapuruukku'. It's shrimps and redonion in curry-apple sauce, with wildrice. Delicious, and not expensive.

jarto's Restaurant Tip

Try the Finnish fish foods. Some of these should probably be presented on the dangers-section but I'll take a risk...Silli. It, well, can't be described by words. You have to see it with your own eyes. If you actually have guts to taste it and even like it, you may have what it takes to survive here Kalakukko. You can buy this at least in Kuopio but also on markets around Finland. It's bread filled with very small fish and pork.Pääpälli (pictured above). Doesn't it look delicious? Ok, I'm kidding. It doesn't exist but I couldn't resist Let's try something that doesn't look disgusting. The smoked salmon is actually really delicious.Back to weird looking foods. How about mämmi? It's traditional easter food. It looks like thick, black porridge made of rye. You know why I say that it looks weird when you actually see it.You want dessert? Try salmiakki although I don't know anyone (besides...

Eating in Finland is a bit...

by atredes

Eating in Finland is a bit expensive. For example if you want to go the cheap route and head down to the local supermarket you will find youyrself spending more than you would like. Also some of the food can feel a little too processed. Bread is a dead loss , packs are tiny and feel like they've gone off before you get home. Some of the fresh meats are tasty but a tad expensive, stay away from anything in a box , it will not taste too good. There are a variety of cheap fast food outlets. Mc Donalds are everywhere and a meal will cost about $6. A better bet is one of finlands own fast food chains Carrols or Hesburger, both these offer pretty decent burgers and salads. In the mid range section there is the Rosso chain , nice selection of pizza's, chicken and the like for a resonable price , a typical meal here will set you back around $12. Pizza-hut in Helsinki and Tapiola are both quite...

My favorites are all Rosso restaurants.....You find them in the biggest towns, mostly somewhere near a Sokos department store...The menu isn´t so great but it is quite cheap and mostly quite good food....It does of course depend on the staff....The prices aren´t too high....One of the good things... I love almost everything from the menu....there´s something for everybody(at least I think so)

Grilli: Grilli

by einokj

This if the way most finnish way of eating. If there is some finnish food culture this is it :-) You can find 'Grilli's everywhere in the Finland. Some of them are open 24 hours a day. You can eat better than in McDonalds, at least chaper, and the portions are such that you are not feeling hungry anymore (at least if you take meal which costs the same as in McDonalds). But honestly, the quality depends 100% on the grill. There are really good ones and really bad ones. And in one grilli, the one portion can be good and the other bad one. At least this is really finnish instead of McDonalds. Kokolihahampurilainen or höyrymakkara

I lived near Jyväskylä, which is in the middle of Finland. For example, there are allkinds of restaurants like restaurant Alexandra (very fancy), Arctia, Jazz Bar, Pizzeria Rax, Ravintola Jyväshovi, Rosso Jyväskeskus and so on.In Helsinki, the capital of Finland, you can find a restaurant of any culture (Indian, Chinese, Spanish..) and of course, there are restaurants where you can find Finnish food.

by sannabanana

If you want a REALLY good steak, you should go to the spanish-style restaurant on Tehtaankatu called Amigo. Sooo lovely!! And just accross the street there's a russian restaurant called Saslik, which is nice too, although expensive but worth it.Another I should mention is Mexicana @ Viiskulma (5 corners), can't remember the name of the street but it's near where Fredrikinkatu begins...One I haven't visited myself yet, but I heard is really good is Tapasta on Uudenmaankatu, and I assume... you can get good tapas there... hee hee.And of course!!! I almost forgot! the one I work at, Laivakoira on tehtaankatu as well. Great pizzas and eccelent service!!! ;)price$$$, worth it! At Amigo- the steak that's served on a wooden board.

'Restaurant' in Finnish is...

by Anya_D

'Restaurant' in Finnish is 'Ravintola'. Bear it in mind when you look for a place to eat, or you will have to starve not finding the 'restaurant'. You of course may be smart enough to recognize a restaurant despite of the signs, but it is better to be sure. But what surprised me was that Finland was not a tea drinking country at all. The tea serving culture is not characteristic here. Who serves tea in a tiny coffee cups??? Or brews it in the pot, pours a cup and takes the pot away? Water deficit in Finland, or what? and only teabags:( As a seafood fan, I was after it all the time in Finland. Shrimps, mussels, octopus, many kinds of fish, especially salmon, it's all really delicios. Finnish speciality is reindeer meat, also worth trying if cooked well.
