Small shops / department stores: Buying Music

by Airpunk

Among Rock and Metal fans, Finnish music is among the big names around the world. That ranges from hard to soft and from fun to serious: Him, Leningrad Cowboys, Lordi, Sunrise Avenue, Scandiniavian Music Group, The Rasmus and many more. But that becomes sometimes confusing when you would like to buy some music. CDs are sorted mainly by two categories: Finnish and Non.Finnish. That means that you will often find Lordi’s monsters next to older ladies singing about the beauty of Finnish lakes. And that you have to be sure where your band comes from as Finnish bands singing in English or any other language are also sorted under “Finnish”. Some other music stores have a good metal selection. Sometimes, it is a little too good for my taste. I didn’t know that there were so many sorts of metal music and every single one has its own shelf. And I am happy that R’n’B, HipHop and similar types of...

Saluhallen, Helsinki: Market Hall

by hopang

Saluhallen is a local market hall situated at the harbour in the city of Helsinki. Saluhallen is a Swedish word mainly to attract Swedish visitors as there are many visitors travelling by ferries from Stockholm throughout the year. In fact there are daily departures by Viking Line and Silja Line between Helsinki and Stockholm. Saluhallen has a lot to offer especially to local and foreign tourists. Wide range of fresh food are on sale at the market hall such as fresh seafood and other meat like chickens and porks, local sausages, canned food and drinks. For those who are hungry and thirsty, several cafés, bars and restaurants are located in the market hall for you to chill out! Fresh meat and fish Reasonable pricing compared to other outlets in the city of Helsinki.

Flea Market at the harbour at Helsinki

by hopang

The flea market at the harbour of Helsinki is located just outside Saluhallen (Market Hall) at the harbour between Viking Line and Silja Line terminals. You can purchase your favourite Helsinki and Finland souvenirs from the market at reasonable prices. Local arts and crafts can also be purchased from the stalls. Fried small fishes are very popular at the market. We certainly enjoyed eating these fried little fishes. Helsinki souvenirs, hand-made local handicrafts and fried little fishes are highly recommended. Cheaper than those in the outlets in the city centre.

Anttila: Cheap Wares

by ellierae

Anttila is a shop that sells everything, from clothes to toiletries. The one at Helsinki City has shut down due to building work going on around there. But the nearest one is a Helsinki Kamppi, trams 3T and 3B stop nearby. There are Anttila shops in Seinajoki, Jyvaskyla and Kouvola. I saw a nice jacket priced at £14.The shoes in this shop are priced from £8 to £30.A very nice shop.Bought boots, shoes and Jewellery from here. It depends what you are looking for.

Euroihme: Euro Time

by ellierae

Everything in this shop is priced at 1 Euro.I bought some nice things from there which I know I could not get back home. This shop has shut down due to building work going on around there. But help is at hand there is another Euro shop selling things for 1, 2 and 5 Euros it is called Eurokauppu and is on Kaisaniemenkatu, Helsinki. Trams 3T and 3B stopped nearby. Wooden massagers are priced in Stockmanns at £9. They were the same in this shop for 70pAll sorts of things from kitchen ware to clothes. One Euro Only

Shopping in Finland

by FinElina

Finland is a quite expensive country to do shopping, especially if compared to Eastern or Southern Europe countries. However, if you avoid the most expensive boutiques and shops, you won't lose all your money.I'll give you some examples of affordable, inexpensive and expensive shops:Department stores:Stockmann*Definitely has all you need, at least more than any other department store. You get good, even personal service but the prices are the highest. (Same product may be twice as expensive as in another shop). Stockmann department stores are in Helsinki (in city centre and in Itäkeskus), Turku, Tampere and Oulu. Anttila*Becoming more and more expensive. Yet, the service and quality of products remaining the same. Has mostly basic products but also some quality ones. Has an affordable music department. Sokos*I would say between Stockmann and Anttila. Quality is better than in Anttila,...

The Lapponia liqueurs

by Gili_S

The Lapponia liqueurs are the best of the many kinds of liqueurs made in Finland. There are the blueberry, red berry, cranberry, cloudberry and some others as well. Best to buy them at the airport as they will be duty free and cheaper.

Hanolenon: Happy Hanolenon

by ellierae

This big shop has a full range of womens, mens and childrens clothes and shoes. This shop has great sales at certain times of the year.I bought some fake-fur lined leather boots for £30 and a Finnish woolen jumper that had been reduced from £50 to £14, a great bargain. Anything but this is one of the shops that the Finns use. So no sky high tourist prices.

Ruskapirtti: Have a Lappi Time

by ellierae

This shop is owned by Layna and she makes you feel welcome. It is neatly set out. Local crafts, jewellery, postcards and other Lappish things.I bought a Christmas decoration for this year for £2 (which had been reduced).I also bought some sterling silver earrings which I knew I could not get anywhere else seen as they are unusual. They cost me £4. Depends on what you are looking for.

Olvi Doublebock

by Gili_S

If you want to take with you home a sample of Finnish beer, maybe its better to wait for your departure and buy this excellent Finnish Doublebock beer made by Olvi. It is strong, it taste good and much better then the average waterish Finnish lagers.I am not sure now if they have it at the airport but surely they have this beer on the ferries that goes to Sweden or Estonia.
