Birch Mug

by Gili_S

This is a traditional coffee mug made of one piece of birthroot. It has been traditionally made in Lapland for centuries. But you must be careful, there are now some massive productions such items and they are not the real ones. Best would be to buy it in Lapland. Aout 35 euro in the south, a bit cheaper in Lapland.

Brunberg: Chocolates aplenty

by bobs12

Delicious chocolates The truffles. They're the best. Oh, and so are the toffees. And the mints. But don't eat the liqourice. No. That's bad. Should really put liqourice in the dangers section. Nothing. They have free samples : )

Kalevala Koru Factory Outlet: Traditional Jewelry

by musti72

Most of the Kalevala jewelry models date back to the Viking Era more than a thousand years ago, but the vast collection of jewelry also includes models that are almost twice that age. Of course they are replicas, but it is the design that counts. This shop is a factory outlet, so it is convenient to buy the jewelry here and not at shops in the center.Open Mon - Fri 9 - 17, Sat 10 - 14

Alko: Alcohol shops

by musti72

The only place where you can buy alcohol stronger than beer are the state owned Alko shops. You find them in every town and prices are quite high because of the taxes.Finland has quite an alcohol problem, you can experience that especially on weekends when you can see even 12 year old kids drunk on the streets. Probably that's just a consequence of the high prices which makes it a "special" product. Great choice of wine.

Everywhere during summer: The Best Strawberries in the World

by musti72

Strawberries or "Mansikka" in finnish are really special there. The many hours of light and sunshine during the finnish nordic summer make them the most sweet and flavoured strawberries I've ever tried! about 3 Euros for a Liter

Take Finlandia home!

by Knutt

No, not the vodka, the music!I think Jean Sibelius' "Finlandia" is a wonderful souvenir to take home, especially after visiting the Sibelius monument in the Sibelius Park on Mechelininkatu. The music of the most famous Finnish composer will certainly remind you of the time you have spent in the country.-But maybe you want to take a bottle of liquid Finlandia as well... ;-))

Finland: Expensive (?) Finland

by Heinisuo

Finland is considered to be quite an expensive country. Nowadays many European countries are probably as expensive as (or even more expensive than) Finland, but prices might "shock" you in some occasions. Prices can vary quite a lot between different shops, attractions etc. (as you may know), but here are some examples anyway (prices are somewhere around these figures, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong):- Cup of coffee in a cafeteria: 1.80 €- Pizza in a pizzeria: 6-8 €- Chinese fast food (takeaway): 4-8 €- Meal in a restaurant: 9-15 €- Half a litre beer in a restaurant: 4-5 €- 0.3 litre bottle of beer from market: 1 €- One litre milk: 0.90 €- 0,75 litre bottle of wine from the liquor store (ALKO): 5-20 €- Half a litre Kossu: 14 €- One litre petrol: 1.10 €- One way bus or train ticket from Helsinki to Tampere (180 km): 20 €- One months rent in 30 sq.meter flat in Helsinki: 400-550 €- One...

At the airport: Before you leave

by Gili_S

If you happened to travel by flight, you can leave some of your shopping for the airport. Some items will be cheaper there, especially if you fly out of the EU, as you will be entitle to pay tax free for items. Alcohol for example will be half price. Cosmetics items will be cheaper as well.Penna Design and Kalevala products are available here as well.

Various Design and Tourist shops: The Esplanad park

by sinoda

The Esplanad park is a rectangular green area in the prime spot of Helsinki. North and south of it there are two rather luxurious shopping streets, the Northern and the Southern Esplanad. Here you find special design shops and merchandise at a special price ; ) Anything! From well-known Alvar Aalto furniture to famous Marimekko clothes. In Decembre there is a Christmas market in the park, always good for some snappies. Prices are rather high in this area.

Some shopping centres - malls: Shopping in the Capitol area

by sinoda

There are numerous shopping centres in and around Helsinki. Surely best known are Stockmann, Sokos and Forum in the absolute focus of the city of Helsinki. Around Helsinki you find some malls like Itäkeskus (easyly accesible by metro), and Jumbo (by bus), Iso Omena (by bus) and others. More over, big foreign companies have errected huge, massive shopping areas here and there for instance IKEA, Gigantti and ON/OFF (electronics), Stadium (sports gear) and Bauhaus (building tools) Virtually anything. The range is large! From dumping to exclusive prices.
