 | Finland Things To Do | Tips 391 - 400 of 446 | | Pihlajavesi wilderness church was built in the 1700´s and it actually deep inside the woods. This is an amazing place and the church itself is something very special. All made with old wood painted in red colour with a small adjacent yard. On the right side of the front part of the church you have a small long house with a old boat inside. This church is not in Pihlajavesi but in Pihlajaveden just a 2km from Pihlajavesi . You have to go in direction of the lake and just follow the sign that say Vanha Kirkko (old church). Leave a Comment

Rauma is an idyllic seaside town on the Gulf of Botnia, founded in 1442. It once was a notable seaport. Ships sailed to Stockholm, Germany and the Baltic States, exporting timber, wooden dishes, butter, hides, dried pike and seal oil. Salt, cloth, wine, spices and corn were imported to Rauma. Because it's connection with seamen, the town has developed its own distinctive dialect that contains many words from Swedish, English, Estonian, Russian and French. The heart of the town is the historic Old Rauma, the largest preserved coherent medieval wooden town area in the Nordic region. It was built around the Franciscan monastery although the monastery no longer exists. Although the area was ravaged by fire in the late 17th century, it has preserved its ancient vernacular architectural heritage. In 1991, it was selected for UNESCO's World Heritage Sites for the reason that it provides an outstanding example of an old Nordic city constructed in wood. It is extremely difficult to find many very old wooden buildings in Finland very often since they were frequently destroyed in fires or during the various battles, wiping out almost all the buildings in town. As a consequence, the 13th century Church of the Holy Trinity burnt to the ground as did the storerooms and the timber storage area in the harbour. The buildings in Old Rauma date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries and form a myriad of shops, complemented by an idyllic backdrop of wooden houses and lush gardens, a marketplace, and many historically and culturally significant sights. In total, there are 600 buildings of which nearly 200 are shops. People still live, work, spend their leisure time, and trade in Old Rauma. Over 600 inhabitants live the area. The narrow winding streets and alleyways and the irregularly shaped lots reflect their roots in the Middle Ages.

Rauma is one of the UNESCO protected places in Finland. Its was built back in 1442 and by the 1800´s it became famous by its specific type of local craft. Rauma for itself is not much I think. I mean I was expecting much more for it, but the Vanha Rauma or the Old Town district is worth to be visited and you´ll apreciate the hundreds of wooden houses. This is supposed to be the most well preserved wooden town in all Nordic countries. More than 500 wooden houses and in wonderful shape. Leave a Comment Directions: Rauma is located 40km from Pori on the West coast of Finland.

Take the boat from Helsinki harbour to go and see the main fortress of Helsinki. Kind of symbolic ofthe history of Finland, this was the Swedish defence against the Russian navy in the two countries prolonged battles of the centures (with Finland as the battleground). Is in effect the twin of the St Peter & Paul fortress in St Petersburg (see my page) as the Russians defence against the Swedish navy. Directions: Take a boat from Helsinki harbour - easy to find.
