A brown bear family by musti72 This zoo is really an experience for the whole family. It is built by respecting very much the animals. They have huge spaces so that not always you can spot them. It is almost like a safari on foot. There you can see all the species from finland and other arctic regions like polar bears, wolves and mooses. Where are my photos??? Borrowed this from intenet by Janni67 Let's head towards westcoast on the map. Leaving Helsinki the next big city will be Turku (with its' 175 000 residents) in the south-western corner. Turku is the oldest city in Finland. It's also the only Finnish member in the modern "Hanseatic league" and will be hosting the meeting of the Hanseatic towns in 2004 when Turku will be celebrating her 775th birthday. Turku is often said to be the only West European town in Finland as all medieval European towns have four things in common: a river for transport, a cathedral for religious power, a castle that represent the secular power and last but not least - a market place for acts of commerce. Turku has them all! Turku was born along the river Aura and it is one of the best attractions of the city. All the main places of interest are located by the river. The Great fire destroyed nearly the whole city centre in 1827! The zcars architect C.L. Engel gave the city a new plan and some stately buildings like the orthodox church, the Swedish theatre at the market and an Observatory building on the Vartiovuori Hill. And what is there see for a tourist? How about "Turun linna" -the grey stone Castle with history dating back to the 1280s, The Cathedral (which is the mother church of the Lutheran Church of Finland), Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova and the Handicrafts Museum Luostarinmäki. We'll be visiting Turku in December again and I'll build a whole page of the city after that. Link will appear here as well. Leave a Comment

Old Wooden Houses by musti72 Old Rauma is the largest unified historical wooden town in the Nordic countries. For that it has entered in the UNESCO World Heritage list. There are about 600 houses built side by side and still inhabitated, some are residencial, some are shops and some are restaurants. It is a really romantic town and quite unusual. Leave a Comment

the Torni (very small) by sinoda Helsinki is a rather flat city with no real skyscraper and little high buildings of which the least ones are accessible. There however are exceptions for instance the Torni (the "tower") at Yrjönkatu and Kalevankatu and the tower at the olympia stadium. From both you'll have a wonderful view. Leave a Comment Directions: Torni - east of Mannerheimintie from Stockmann. Olympia stadium - north of the Töölön lahti (bay)

by sinoda the smoke sauna Ever been sweating in a sauna? Ok, that's alright, but have you ever been sweating in a smoke sauna? Yeah, well, that's a totally different story. The traditional smoke sauna has no chimney what so ever. Which means the smoke does not escape the sauna during the heating up. The fireplace is somewhat larger and has massively more stones to be heaten up. So, therefore you need to heat up the sauna much longer - some 4-7 hours - in order to get the stones really hot. Once there's enough heat you remove the cole and ashes from the fireplace and the smoke from the sauna and leave the sauna for half an hour rest. Then you may enjoy the sauna as long as you wish to - the heat is stored in the huge mass of stones and lasts for many and many hours.... a hint: don't rush, take it slow - the sauna develops its delicate character only after some hours and is then at its best with soft and caressing steam eruptions mixed little traces of smoke.... you'll just love it. Autumn tints / fall foliage by finlandia Finland is a paradise for all nature lovers. The archipelago of Turku is said to be the most beautiful one in the whole world. Lakes, forests and fells are very exciting, too. There are many beautiful national parks in Finland. There are four different seasons and an unbelievable wonderful nature in Finland, especially in Lapland (Lappi, Lappland, Laponie, Lapponia): the midnight sun (nightless days during summer, in Nuorgam between May 15th and July 28th), the northern lights (Aurora borealis), beautiful fells (i.e. arctic treeless mountains), 200 000 reindeer etc. There are 187 888 lakes (60 000 of them are big ones), 179 584 islands, 5 100 rapids and 450 600 summer cottages in Finland! Saimaa is the biggest lake district of Europe. Leave a Comment

Yeah, another line to the list :) by SanguiniA I am not a person who likes to visit the usual tourist things, but lines seem to fascinate me and I am trying to make a collection of them (but only if they REALLY happen to be along the way!!) The Arctic circle is only 3km from Rovaniemi, and on the road the way to Lapland, so it is a convenient little stop for a picture, as well as some souvenier shopping. A nice touch is the Arctic post office, where you can buy a postcard (from the overwhelming selection) and attach special Chrismas stamps and they will also get stamped with special arctic postage stamp - so a great idea if you know someone into stamp collecting. You can also opt to have the postcard or Xmas card delivered in the Xmas period. Nearby is also the famous Santapark. Note opening days for 2006/07: 22nd November - 14th January. For more info visit the Santapark webpage Leave a Comment

Fishing in the Tampere region by AbbyL Now this isn't the sort of thing I'd normally find myself doing on holiday, but "when in Rome" and all that........ Of course, Finland is famous for it's fishing opportunites and it's easy to see why. With over 180,000 lakes you're never far from water, and with that many to choose from you're virtually guaranteed the place to yourself. It's the perfect opportunity to get away from it all, to spend a few hours unwinding with your own thoughts. If you're going to fish with a rod, bear in mind that you do need a permit. These cost €6 euro for seven days and can be bought over the internet, at banks or via many self-service machines. You don't need a permit if you're using just a hook and line. One last thing - preserve the stunning scenery - take your rubbish home with you! Leave a Comment Address: So many lakes to choose from...!Directions: It seems you're never far from water!
