Olimpic's Stadium in HelsinkiAtletic have held quite a particular importance in Finland and in the mind of Finns.Excellent results of Finns' in the Olympic games fostered the dream that one day it would be possible to hold the games in Helsinki.Stadium was built on June 1938 and modernizated on 1990 - 1994.Most important events were XVth Olympic Games - 19.July - 3.August 1952

Paavo Nurmi - runner, Olympic champion.Born 13.6.1897 Turku, died 2.10.1973 Helsinki. He is the best known long distance runner, and to the people of Finland he was and he is the man who deserve all respect.

Look at the monument of Jan Sibelius, great compositor.Born 8.12.1865, died 20.9.1957One of the major composer wrote exiting highly individual music with great format logic and power. Most famous works are: En Saga, Pohiola's Daughter, his Violin Concerto, String Quartet and Finlandia HymnVery interesting modern style of monument dedicated to his memory.

Finnish tango will sweep you off of your feet. Unlike the Argentinian version Finnish tango is being danced in an A-shaped form (meaning that the two dancers will have their upper bodies closer together and less the feet).Tango will be danced in Finland mainly on three occasions: 1 During summer in the more or less 100 dance pavillions around Finland.2 During the Tango Festival week in Seinäjoki (in July)3 As a form of sport all around the year. These three occasions do not always necessarily represent the Finnish tango.

Pihlajasaari is a rather small island off the coast of Helsinki and you will find beautiful lonely beaches, forests, rocks, a wonderful kahvila with an even more beautiful terrace and even a nudist beach here. I absolutely loved lying on the beach here (not the nudist one tho ;) - with views of ships on their way to Tallinn, bright sunshine and with the funny colourful huts behind us.

All Finnish musicans must contend with comparing themselves to their most famous composer.Sibelius.But the reaction among younger composers, especially in the 1960s and '70s, was a vehement rejection of his romanticism in favor of avant-garde styles imported from elsewhere in Europe. Minimalism has never taken hold in Finland. There is no dominant style any more; instead, a lively pluralism can be heard on the record labels -Finlandia, Ondine, Alba, Bis and Naxos - that commonly release works by Finnish composers. On three successive evenings last November, I attended top-notch performances of both Finnish and foreign music. A production of Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina" at the Finnish National Opera may not have reached Metropolitan Opera standards. But since this piece requires as many as 200 performers on stage, the level of expertise was more than impressive.Church services on weekends...
Take the boat from Helsinki harbour to go and see the main fortress of Helsinki.Kind of symbolic ofthe history of Finland, this was the Swedish defence against the Russian navy in the two countries prolonged battles of the centures (with Finland as the battleground). Is in effect the twin of the St Peter & Paul fortress in St Petersburg (see my page) as the Russians defence against the Swedish navy.

If you are looking for authenticity, then Rauma is the right place for you... Again those pretty little houses made of wood, typical to the northern countries, and so full of charm ! I really enjoyed the visit !See my Rauma page for more informations

Naantali is a pretty little town close to Turku that really can’t be missed. Probably nicer and more alive during the summer, but a walk in the strong autumn wind is quite something too :-) Its narrow streets borded with woodden houses and leading to the charming harbour and church is worth a visit ! See my Naantali page for more informations and pictures.
