Merikarvia in ICE
Yes this is a swim and boat resort for summe recreation in the area. Merikarvia is not far away from Pori, only 40km actually so many people run away from the city here.At this time of year (Janury) all the water gets frozen.

The church and cemitery in Lappfjard or Lapväärtii are wonderful to see. This is a small village with this large church that mixes bricks and wood in it architecture. This time of year with snow makes the spot even better I think as the black graves go along pretty well with the contrast of the white from the snow.

The Old Church of Kristinestad is indeed one of my favorites in Finland for what I have seen. I still have a lot to see, but I think this will be on the TOP5...This Church called Ulrika Eleonora Kyrka was constructed from 1698 to 1700 and still maitains many of its original details. As I visited it, some recovering was taking place. I think a part of the roof fall down so I think this was like emergency call for the old 17th century church. The church was named after the 17th century Swedish Quenn wife of Karl XI, Ulrika Eleonora.

This is another very old but well preserved fortress.Hamenlinna fortress is situated in the city of Hamenlinna located north of Helsinki and takes about 1:15 to drive there. However the train from Helsinki center is also a convinient and cheap way to get there. Have a beer in the train restaurant on the way.
If you like history, I suggest you take a short inexpensive boat ride from Helsinki center to the island of Suomelinna. This is a fort that was built, well very long ago however it is very well preserved. I like to go there also for pic-nics and swim..
The forests and lakes in Finland are really beautiful, peacful and most provide camping possibilities and hiking trails. I really recommend that you just get out of the city into the nature.Example to Luukki or Nuuksio
Guided snowmobile safaris, lasting from 2 hours to a full day. It is possible to connect meals and/or a sauna bath in a traditional Finnish smoke sauna with the snowmobile safari package. Safaris are always tailored according to the needs of the group. Really exciting experiment to anyone - and it's easy too.

Tampere is an industrial town, a former centre of textile industry (19th century) and hence numerous factory chimneys in its skyline. But it shouldn't put you off. Tampere is beautifully situated between two lakes: Pyhajarvi and Nasijarvi and has lots of parks and walking routes. There is also a wide choice of museums, including a museum of dolls, Lenin's museum and Espionage Museum. Tampere cathedral built at the beginning of the 20th century is worth a visit for its frescos and stainglass windows.

Turku (Abo in Swedish) is the oldest town in Finland. It was the capital of the country until 1812. Probably its significance in history is one of the reasons why tourists visit Turku. Its greatest attraction is the medieval castle with dungeons. Another highlight is Lutheran cathedral, whose oldest part comes from the 13th century. Any visitor to Finland must have heard about Sibelius - the outstanding Finnish composer. Here in Turku in Sibelius Museum you can listen to his music and see objects connected with his life.

If I have to sum up Åland in a few words, I would choose “incredible nature and beautiful landscapes”. Surely, you can’t miss this archipelago if you happen to travel around Finland ! The way you get there is already worth it ! The boat will take you through the archipelago (from Stockholm or from Turku), with its great views. I really enjoyed this !See my Åland page for more information !
