Lapland Area: Oulanka National Park

by SanguiniA

Interesting park with some nice Lapland style landscape, and a river that suddenly turns into some nice rapids. Excellent spot for some birdwatching, with some Siberian species often spotted in the area. The headquarters have a delightful cafe and souvenir shop. The staff is very helpful and wil give you leaflets with information about the fauna of the park.

Kaunissaari Island - Beautiful Island

by finlandia

Kaunissaari (literally Beautiful Island) Island is a traditional, small but still lively fisherman village near the city of Kotka in Southern Finland.Boats from Sapokka Harbour (in front of Maretarium Aquarium, Kotka) about 2-3 times a day in the summer. Tickets are sold on boats. There may be quite windy on the sea (even if a day may be warm). So take warm clothes with you.On the island you find a very small museum, a restaurant (good fish dishes) and accommodation. Remember to taste extremely delicious salmon pastries which are sold at a kiosk near the museum.Other very interesting islands near the city of Kotka are Tammio (only one permanent inhabitant!), Ulkotammio and Haapasaari (10 inhabitants, 25 kilometers from Kotka). For timetables see the link below, please.

Aurora borealis - the Northern Lights

by finlandia

The pulsating and multicoloured northern lights are born at a height of about 100 kilometers above ground level as electrically charged particles collide with the earth´s atmosphere near the magnetic poles. Northern lights can be seen from the beginning of September until April (but not every night). Our summertime isn´t dark enough for seeing northern lights (we have the midnight sun).

National parks

by finlandia

There are four different seasons and an unbelievable wonderful nature in Finland, especially in Lapland (Lappi, Lappland, Laponie, Lapponia): the midnight sun (nightless days during summer, in Nuorgam between May 15th and July 28th), the northern lights (Aurora borealis), beautiful fells (i.e. arctic treeless mountains), 200 000 reindeer etc. There are 187 888 lakes (60 000 of them are big ones), 179 584 islands and 5 100 rapids in Finland! Saimaa is the biggest lake district of Europe.

Visit Korkeasaari or Helsinki Zoo!

by crazydingo

I have been an intern for 3 weeks, to learn about how things go in other zoo's. It was fantastic! Korkeasaari means high island. And darn it is... If you visit the zoo, put on your moutainshoes, you'll be needing them. No trail for very little children. Lots of special animals. And during summer, the boottrip from Helsinky center to the island is very nice. Loved it.

Esplanadi

by mallyak

In the heart of Helsinki, the capital of Finland, the two streets constituting Esplanadi (Swedish: Esplanaden) are officially named Pohjoisesplanadi (Finnish for the North Esplanade Street, Swedish: Norra Esplanaden) and Eteläesplanadi (Finnish for the South Esplanade street, Swedish: Södra Esplanaden). They lead from Erottaja Square to the Market Square (Kauppatori), and the North Esplanade Street extends along the border of the Market Square up to the Katajanokka Channel. Parallel to Pohjoisesplanadi, a little northwards, is Aleksanterinkatu. Esplanadi is colloquially called "Espa".
