Rovaniemi

by Leipzig

Rovaniemi has about 36,000 inhabitants, is located at the confluence of the rivers Kemijoki and Ounasjoki and is the capital of Lapland. The most impressive construction is the suspension bridge, spanning the Ounaskoski River. It is called Lumberjack's Candle Bridge (J?tk?nkynttil?) with it's "eternal flame".

Meet Santa Claus

by Leipzig

This is the place why most people come to Rovaniemi - Santa Claus' workshop. When I was here (August 25) only a few tourist were around to buy candles, balls for christmas trees, jumpers and gingerbread. I wonder why?Oh, and Santa was on holidays - yes, really! - Santa Park was closed due to holidays. Santa has to work one day a year only and if I come to town he is on holidays? Grrr... Hope he's around next time.

Inari

by Leipzig

The village of Inari is very small. It has less then 600 inhabitants but its history dates 8000 years back. It started when Sami fishermen settled down here. Today the town constits of a major road, a supermarket, a tourist information, at least one hotel and several residential houses. But I read in a pamphlet that it is the centre of Sami culture. The village is located on the popular Inari Lake, the third largest lake of Finland with borders Norway and Russia.

Oulu

by Leipzig

Oulu is situated at the mouth of Oulu River by the Gulf of Bothnia in northern Finland and is the sixth biggest city in Finland. The city was founded in 1605 by King Karl IX of Sweden. The name Oulu comes from the Sami word of floodwater. Most interesting is the huge park. It belongs to the university and contains world's northernmost botanical garden. There are also to glassy pyramids in the park, called "Romeo and Juliet ".

Tampere

by Leipzig

Tampere was founded 1779 and is with its 200,000 inhabitants today Finland's third largest city. I was told that Tampere has a lot to offer but unfortunately I couldn't see a lot of its beauty. We just stayed less then one hour in Tampere because of the heavy rain. I need to go back again to explore the city highlights.

Helsinki

by Leipzig

Helsinki, or Helsingfors as it is called in Swedish is Finlands capital and largest city. The city is located at the Gulf of Finland, right across Estonia's capital Tallinn. The city is built in very modern styles as a lot of buildings were destroyed in the last war. Most impressive here is the harbour. We could see a giant ship anchor here. The university city is build on a peninsnula and several islands and has a lot of green parks.

Port of Helsinki

by hopang

The port of Helsinki is the busiest passenger port in the country and is also the main port of Finland for cargo traffic. It handles most of the country's cargo traffic with facilities for large container traffic. The South Harbour has ferry terminals for passenger traffic built for cruise ships such as Viking Line and Silja Line which depart for Mariehamn, Åland and Stockholm, Sweden. You can travel to Tallinn in Estonia from the Port of Helsinki. The terminals in the harbour handle approximately 5 millions passengers annually. The deep harbour also attracts international cruise ships from around the world during the summer months.

Ålands Museum, Åland

by hopang

Ålands Museum is located on the eastern end of the harbour between the Town Hall and the Parliament building in the heart of the town of Mariehamn. It is one of the few interesting museums on the island of Åland and one of the few popular tourist attractions at Mariehamn. The museum is located in a comparatively small building as depicted on our photo. It has permanent exhibitions on the history of Åland from the pre-historic era until present day Åland. The opening hours are between 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. daily during the summer months except Monday which is closed. A souvenir shop is also located in the museum dealing in books, post cards and other souvenirs.

Postal Museum, Eckerö, Åland

by hopang

The Postal Museum is located in a large building just within a stone's throw from the ferry terminal in Eckerö in Åland. It exhibits mainly stamps and the history of postal services in Åland in particular and Finland in general. The museum is considered a "must-visit" museum for those who are interested in stamps, for stamp collectors and stamp enthusiasts.
