Pommern Museum Ship, Mariehamn, Åland

by hopang

Pommern is a museum ship anchored at the harbour of Mariehamn in Åland not far from the city centre. It was constructed in the early 20th century. It is a four masted barque built in Glasgow in the United Kingdom. The ship is approximately 95 meters long and 15 meters wide and has a total weight of approximately 2,300 tons. Its main mast is approximately 50 meters high. The museum ship is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the town of Mariehamn. It is also one of the few museum ships in Northern Europe! The operating hours of the museum ship are between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. daily during the summer months. Admission fees are 5.00 euros for adult and 3.00 euros for children. Make it a point to visit Pommern Museum Ship when you visit Åland on your vacation! We consider the museum ship one of the most beautiful we have ever seen in Europe!

Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki

by hopang

Uspenski Cathedral is located near to the Viking Line terminal at the harbour in Helsinki. We have been to the outside of this cathedral twice from our several trips to Helsinki but each time we wanted to enter the cathedral, it closed - hard luck! The Uspenski Cathedral is undoubtedly one of the few prominent landmarks that dominate the skyline of Helsinki together with the Lutheran Cathedral nearby.

Lutheran Cathedral, Helsinki

by hopang

Lutheran Cathedral is located at Senate Square just 300 meters from Saluhallen and the harbour of Helsinki. It is a lovely Russian Orthodox Cathedral, one of the few located in Northern Europe! We have been to the outside of Lutheran Cathedral at Senate Square on numerous occasions, probably five or six times, but we have never entered the Cathedral before! We will make it a point to enter the Cathedral at least once on our next trip to Helsinki. Nevertheless the Lutheran Cathedral is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Helsinki!

Lapland - my Paradise!

by finlandia

Finland is the home country of Santa Claus. Santa lives on a fell called Korvatunturi (Ear Mountain) in the municipality of Savukoski. Santa can´t live on the North Pole because there isn´t anything to eat for his reindeer there. But in Finnish Lapland a reindeer is a very common animal and it has a lot of food there. There are about 200 000 reindeer in Finland. Eagles, foxes, swans and wood grouse are other common animals. The spruce is the most common tree in Lapland. Wild cloudberry and Arctic bramble are the two most highly valued berries of Lapland. Lapland is a paradise for all nature lovers!Lapland - Santa's home - is very beautiful: fells (i.e. arctic treeless mountains), the northern lights (Aurora borealis) during winter and the midnight sun (night-less days) during summer. During the summer the sun doesn´t set at all! The midnight sun is visible for 20 nights at the Arctic...

Lean-To shelters for bbq during hiking

by gubbi1

A very nice service I found during my stay in Finland are the many Lean-To shelters around the towns and remote in the countryside like hiking areas and national parks. Most of them have free fire wood prepared for use and some even a dry toilett. Often in a nice place they invite for a rest during which you can prepare your bbq. As they are open for everyone you frequently will share it with others and by this meet different people. The definition for Finnish lean-to shelters (Laavu) at Wikipedia...I try to set up a list here with pages of lean-to shelters around Finland.Laavus listed under Services for destinations...Laavus around Rovaniemi...

ACTIVITY VILLAGE

by alyf1961

We travelled with cosmos on an all inclusive day trip to Lapland. We were met at Manchester airport by cosmos staff dressed as husky’s and reindeers. The flight was fantastic as everybody [including the pilot] sang carols and Christmas songs. When we got to Lapland we were taken by coach [after changing into ski suits] to an activity centre.we went on sleigh rides pulled by reindeer and husky’s, we went a snow mobile and tobogganing. In between all the activities there were wooden huts with roaring fires and hot fruit drinks. After a lunch we were taken to Santa’s village where there was a shop, post office and of course Santa’s house. After sending post cards home and visiting Santa and getting a present, we were taken back to Kittila airport for the journey home.
