Lapland Area: Inari (the Village)

by SanguiniA

The Inari village is small and quiet ... and this was in summmer. I wonder what happens in winter! There is a pub to hang out in a view of the lake ... especially nice with a Lonkero in hand and a view of the midnight sun. But I did not really appreciate the dancing contest that there was ... not really my style - so don't ask me if I got any trophies! There are some nice campsites here to spend the night right by the lake, so it makes a good base for exploring the area.

Arctic Circle - Napapiiri

by SanguiniA

I am not a person who likes to visit the usual tourist things, but lines seem to fascinate me and I am trying to make a collection of them (but only if they REALLY happen to be along the way!!)The Arctic circle is only 3km from Rovaniemi, and on the road the way to Lapland, so it is a convenient little stop for a picture, as well as some souvenier shopping. A nice touch is the Arctic post office, where you can buy a postcard (from the overwhelming selection) and attach special Chrismas stamps and they will also get stamped with special arctic postage stamp - so a great idea if you know someone into stamp collecting. You can also opt to have the postcard or Xmas card delivered in the Xmas period.Nearby is also the famous Santapark. Note opening days for 2006/07: 22nd November - 14th January. For more info visit the Santapark webpage

Rovaniemi

by SanguiniA

Rovaniemi is notorious for being Santa's home, and for being Finland's gateway to Lapland. Just 3 km from the city one can also visit the Arctic Circle. This means that Rovaniemi can boast having the famous summer midnight sun (Jun6th - July7th) as well as regular glimpses of the Aurora Borealis in winter. The city in itself is not particularly interesting, though hanging around by the river or in the terraces on a sunny summer day (sipping some Lonkero) is quite easy-going and relaxing. Distinctive features are the elegant Jätkänkynttila bridge and the modern Artikum Museum.Of course the real attraction is the great outdoors in the nature surrounding Rovaniemi, with plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling in summer, and husky safaris and skiing in winter. Various tour operator shops can be seen around the city to help you make arrangements. 2006 Eurovision winners Lordi's frontman...

Oulu Area: Liminganlahti Bird Sanctuary

by SanguiniA

Liminganlahti Bird Sanctuary in Liminka is a MUST for anyone who likes birds and nature. This is a very important wetland situated near Oulu, in the bay of Liminka. The available bird 'hides'/observation spots offer great views of the birds and the interesting landscape. But if you want to see the birds it is important that you visit in the season ... usually May and early June are the best. Out of season, like in summer it is extremely difficult to see the birds. These months still have the advantage of lots of sunlight, allowing you to bird in peace at any time of the day - so insomniacs won't get bored (or will bore themselves to sleep!) :-)

Oulu Area: Liminka

by SanguiniA

Liminka is a quiet area 25 or 30 km away from Oulu. It is dominated by wonderful fields and it showcases some of the best rural countryside in Finland. The bay of Liminka is very popular amongst birdwatchers for its rich birdlife (only in season and see tip below for more info). This is a great area for cycling, especially if you are staying in the Oulu area. Some interesting things are to be seen here, including the old windmill on the second picture.

Oulu Area

by SanguiniA

The picture just goes to show that nature is at its best everywhere in Finland ... this pic was taken just a few KM from Oulu ... and just a few hundred metres off the main road. So my point here is just explore everywhere, you never know what you might find in the land of the thousand lakes :) Already here in central Finland the nature is more dominating ... further north in Lapland things get even better!

Helsinki

by SanguiniA

Of course no visit to Finland is complete without visiting its elegant capital, Helsinki (or Helsingfors in Swedish), with its undeniable charm forging an interesting fusion between Russian and northern Euopean atmospheres. This city, sprawling over peninsulas and bays in the Baltic sea offers something interesting in every season ... but to me, it looks at its best covered in snow ... it is after all every inch a nordic city. One of the reasons I really like this city is because nature is never far away, drive for a few minutes and you are in some forest or lake. Of course I like it also because there are some nice pubs with an impressive assortment of beers. The must-see places to visit in Helsinki are the Helsinki Cathedral (of course), Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, and the Helsinki Market Square ... more to come when I finally get to build a Helsinki page :-) Helsinki is also a great...

Luukki

This is another beautiful lake in the vicinity of Helsinki ... in the Espoo area to be more exact. Looks wonderful frozen and covered in snow in winter. There is also a trail through the forest for a nice, relaxing walk.

Saunas by the lake

by Melissa

I have taken plenty of saunas in my life (coming from a Finnish background), but nothing compares to the sauna I took on the lake that was handmade out of cedar. It smelled amazing and when I got too hot I would go jump in the freezing cold lake just outside and be ready for my next session. We did this all night long and I've never felt better. For those who drink alcohol, you have to drink twice as much because you will sweat it out almost as fast as you drink it!
