Imatran koski; Finland by sinoda but no.... To some this may be a spectacular Off the Beaten Path tip, but I was disappointed - again. I already had visited the rapids in Imatra in 1997 - it was just as lame as this year. Last time you even could go closer to the edge of the canyon, but now they had moved the path away from the edge. The problem is the canyon has no water - they damn the water up-stream and let release it only once or twice a day in the tourist season...
If you want to see something outside the "show time" you better walk along the canyon on the side of the valtion hotelli (State's Hotel). Here you can grasp some of the idea of what it might be about when there is something happening.
Hmm.... go up north to the Kainuu district. There you have similar canyons, only much more impressive and really marvellous sceneries... Leave a Comment

Suomennlinna, locals in the sunshine by Elena_blue Our Lonelyplanet and Rough guide - we had both in the company- were describing Suommenlinna island, outside Helsinki as a MUST visit spectacular place. Well, ok, neither the trip with the boat nor the island itself was actually that good to me. Locals go there for resting in the sunshine during long summer days, but for me it was just a 15 min. walk around and a coffee.
It is easy to go there and it does not take long. Take a boat from Helsinki port, and in 20 min. you are there. Follow the well signed path to the other side of the island and make a circle route. Have a coffee to a place with good view, if any, and then go back to take the next boat to Helsinki. All in all, the most it will take you is 2 hrs.
My afternoon could be better if I was staying to my favorite vivid Helsinki Esplanade. But again I would be curious of what Suomennlina looks like! A usual trap for every traveller: to be curious for every thing and every place! :-)

Savonlinna by the lake. by Elena_blue In central and southern Finland, the landscape was everywhere dominated by lakes and forests. This is not a bad thing, at the contrary, it is a peaceful and idyllic place to be, especially during summer. However the mistake we did was that we hired a car in order to go to different places and have different images from the countryside.... And we found out that there were not different images, the landscape was everywhere the same. So we were for 3 days driving and driving without any added value.
Try to arrive to the place where you will overnoght as earlier as you can so can at least relax for a few hours by the lake.
Don't hire a car to drive around in the lakes area. I suggest you go to one place in the area like in Savonlinna stay there and enjoy the surrounding nature with activities like trekking, biking or connoeing.

Swiss Baari, Finland by sinoda While driving on the route #7 let's say from Helsinki towards east you will come across a most peculiar spot, a bar to be exact - the Swiss Baari just outside Kotka. There's nothing worth seeing - really. It seems the place is closed, don't know for sure, looks like a ghost house anyway.
When you see it just step on the gas, and pronto! or if you already turned into the yard, just make it a u-turn and hit the street again.
Just try and forget your longing for a swiss bar for a moment - you're in Finland after all... Leave a Comment

I discovered that when in the Lakeland, the shops nearby the bigger tourist attractions carry souvenirs, such as the great Finnish design and different viewcards, at much higher prices than the shopping malls that often carry the exact same goods. Another thing is that you can buy a little sheet of stamps in the paper- and bookstores for less than the same amount of single stamps at the postoffice. So shop in the shoppingmalls instead - it really does pay off;) Leave a Comment

by Waoife Santaland just outside Rovanemi. Unless you have a fetish for souvenir shops then steer clear!!!! Plus a photo with Santa will set you back around €17 - complete rip off. You can however get your passport stamped to say you crossed the Artic Circle for the more reasonable sum of 30 cents (mind you it's free at the post office in the Artic Cirle in Norway) and for €6 you can get a letter from Santa at Christmas time. Alternatively you can write your Christmas cards and they will be posted in December. Leave a Comment

The workers museum at the Finlyson building, it is only a few euros entry fee, but this place is awfully poor value for free Leave a Comment

Tourist traps - ha, there aren't enough tourists to trap in Finland to make it worth while, especially not foreign ones. Everyone is treated equally fairly - tourist or not. You will never be overcharged or ripped off in Finland. The prices are high but they're the same for everyone. Leave a Comment

Make your own food in the forest by Gili_S There are few things that need to be aware in Finland, the main different here then central & western Europe is that the country side, hotels & restaurants are not cheaper then in the cities and actually costing even more sometimes. Also food in the stores in the countryside will cost more. Services as well. It is all because of the distances, remote places and no competition. Also, most stores & restaurants are not private but running by the big cartels companies in Finland. Leave a Comment

Watch out of going by car from Russia to Finland in holidays! People who were going for New Year told they were taking the line to cross the border for about 15 hours! Unbelievable! Leave a Comment
