I discovered that when in the...

I discovered that when in the Lakeland, the shops nearby the bigger tourist attractions carry souvenirs, such as the great Finnish design and different viewcards, at much higher prices than the shopping malls that often carry the exact same goods. Another thing is that you can buy a little sheet of stamps in the paper- and bookstores for less than the same amount of single stamps at the postoffice. So shop in the shoppingmalls instead - it really does pay off;)

Santaland just outside...

by Waoife

Santaland just outside Rovanemi. Unless you have a fetish for souvenir shops then steer clear!!!! Plus a photo with Santa will set you back around €17 - complete rip off.You can however get your passport stamped to say you crossed the Artic Circle for the more reasonable sum of 30 cents (mind you it's free at the post office in the Artic Cirle in Norway) and for €6 you can get a letter from Santa at Christmas time. Alternatively you can write your Christmas cards and they will be posted in December.

Tourist traps - ha, there...

by riku2

Tourist traps - ha, there aren't enough tourists to trap in Finland to make it worth while, especially not foreign ones. Everyone is treated equally fairly - tourist or not. You will never be overcharged or ripped off in Finland. The prices are high but they're the same for everyone.

Don't put more money than you...

by Italian_Roxy

Don't put more money than you wanna spend for a telephone call. You won't be refunded by the telephone booth.I bought a ticket with 1000 km (which finished pretty soon) for travelling by bus and you can use it everywhere. Unfortunately small trips cost a lot more than long trips if compared, so try that special tourist ticket with 1000 km (350 fin marks).Finland is very expensive if you're not cautious and things like cigarettes and spirits are gold there. There are a number of Kahvi (cafetterias), but if you are latin, better you bring a moka with you cause they give you an ESPRESSO wich is indeed instant coffee.Don't go for grocery shopping at Stockman in the center of Helsinki. Too expensive. Better you buy your things far from the center. If you are at a restaurant and ask for a T-Bone Steak prepare yourself to eat a pork steak. They don't mention it in the menu usually.

In most tourist guides you can...

In most tourist guides you can read that 'Finland is a place where East and West meet'. In short, it is not true. I came to Finland from East and can insure you that it is definetely Western country. Finnish-Russian border separates two different worlds. Of course, you can find a lot of Russian restaurants in Helsinki and plenty of kitschy 'matrioshka' staff. You can hear Russian speach here. But that's all. One should go further to the east than Helsinki and even than S-Petersburg to see the East. Finland is different enough to see it for itself.

The best and only period to go...

by Pierangelo

The best and only period to go in Finland (expecially to Lapland) is July! In spring the weather is cold and it rains often, there are few bus connections in the touristic villages suburbs or to the Natural Parks and also the cruises in the lakes are not in work. WHY GO TO NORTH CAPE? To stay in a big troubling building looking a reef under clouded sky? I prefered to see the same sun in Lapland and visit the very interesting Arktikum museum in Rovaniemi. Arktikum at Rovaniemi is a science centre and museum focusing on the Arctic regions and presenting life, natural habitats, history, customs and cultures of the peoples living north of the Arctic Circle.

The church in the rock

'Temppeliaukio church' in Helsinki. It's No. 1 tourist attraction but I think it's the ugliest church in Helsinki, all the others are much better!
