Before going there by hitchhike you should know that it's not common to hitch-hike in Finland anymore. But I should say that we were lucky enough as finnish people stopped their cars for us very often. Don't try to stop the cars on higways - it's forbidden to stop there. A good place for to catch a car: oil stations, some steps behind the last bus stop or some steps before the hihway starts. Enjoy! :) Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Ring I by Gili_S The roads in Finland are in good conditions and not crowded at all. Speed limit is 80 to 100. Motorways, 100-120. (Km/h) In the summer is easy to drive as it is so much light, at winter, the oposite, dark and usually icey and snow. Remember that in Scandinavia (Finland, Sweden, Norway) you are obligate to have driving light at any time while driving, also during the summer days. To check road conditions, see the next link, it is also has hundreds of road web cameras. Roadcams Leave a Comment

by Gili_S Trains are the main connection between cities, wherever train don’t go there is a bus that will go, easy to use and relatively cheap. There are only international train connections with Russia. Daily trains to/from St.Petersburg & Moscow. Leave a Comment

by Gili_S If you are planning Scandinavian trip, take to boat from Stockholm to Helsinki or Turku. Best way for a quick culture presentation, party time, drunken people, food & drinks, clubs & disco, and yes, sauna too. There are boats also from Germany & Estonia. by sinoda Finland is a rather vast country with lots of space. You may find it difficult to get to remote locations which are not by the main roads. In such cases you might turn to VR (National Railway), which to be honest is not always the best idea because of their confusing system of reserving tickets/seats and costy fares. But give it a shot: http://www.vr.fi/heo/eng/index.html I suggest you try Matkahuolto. This is a nationwide net of busconnections, which does deliver not only you but your luggage as well anywhere in Finland at a fair price. Students appreciate Matkahuolto because they give 50% reduction - even for foreign students! Leave a Comment

Renting a car was super relaxed in Finland. I arranged for it before I left home. The car was brought to the hotel in Oulu, the guy put it in the nearby parking garage for me and gave me the ticket. On our return I just parked it there again, gave keys and ticket to the hotel reception and that was it! Back home, I received a receipt by mail for filling up the gast tank. The expected charges for bringing and picking up the car to and from the hotel (two times € 13) were not charged at all. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

On the motorway at Rush hour ;) by sabsi Driving is kinda terrible in Finland to be honest. In the south you will find some motorways so you can get from A to B quite quickly. But as soon as you have to use a normal route instead of a motorway it can get a) slow (because you can only drive 80 and maybe the truck in front of you goes only 60 ;) b) dangerous (because some people don't know how to overtake) c) a pain in the arse (because it takes ages to get from A to B) So for longer trips through Finland I'd take a train maybe?!
