Luxurious boats to Sweden

by finlandia

The best way to travel to Finland is by boat from Stockholm (Tukholma) in Sweden. The archipelago between Sweden and Finland is said to be the most beautiful in the whole world. It is very nice between Stockholm and Helsinki but it is extremely special between Stockholm and Turku. However, the boats are better between Stockholm and Helsinki. The boats sailing from Sweden to Finland are very enormous and very luxurious. I prefer and I recommend Silja Line (Tallink-Silja). Promenade Class cabin isn't the cheapest one but it is very wonderful (and not very expensive). Or take A class cabin (or more expensive one) and so you have a window to see the beutiful archipelago scenery from your own cabin. Viking Line is good, too. They both have very good dinners (the best ones on the Baltic). You are allowed to eat as much as you want (salads, fish, meat, desserts etc.). But you should made...

Eckerö Linjen (Eckerö Line) plies between Grisslehamn in East Sweden and Eckerö in Åland, Finland. The line is suitable for those who drives to Sweden from Åland. Onboard Eckerö Linjen are duty-free shops, café, bar and restaurant for the convenience of the passengers. The crossing between the two harbours takes approximately one hour. Streetnamings of overland roads

by gubbi1

If you travel by road in Finland you will come across streetnames having a townname in them like Kuusamontie. Mostly these streets (overland roads) are particular NOT in the town of which they got their name from. This has the following reason:In Finnish 'tie' is road or street. The 'n' before is comparable to the Englich word 'of'. So e.g. In Oulu 'Kuusamontie' means 'street of Kuusamo' and leads to Kuusamo. You would notice that in Kuusamo the same street is called 'Ouluntie' as there the road leads (back) to Oulu. It helps quite well to find your way through Finland. Some times there is an 'i' infront of the 'n', that is just for the sound.

Finnrail Pass

by OlaeS

Very handy to have if you plann to travel around Finland- even by going only Helsinki- Rovaniemi - Helsinki you save many. Prices (as of December 2007) 2nd class (1st class in brackets):3 days within 1 month €126 (€188)5 days within 1 month €168 (€251)10 days within 1 month 227 (€340)There is 50%discount for under 17 years.Basically with this pass you can travel for free on all regional trains, reservation fee varies between €5 and €31 -depending on the type of train- those for night trains and Pendolinos arethe most expensive. If you travel with a train which departs after 7 pm and arrives during the next day, you can travel with 1 day's marking- and you can start using this from the very first day (with Inter Rail Pass you can't).The only problem with this pass is that you can't buy it on-line. Only place they sell it is international ticket sales office at Helsinki Railway station...

Car on the train

by Gili_S

One of the great services of the Finnish train system is that you have the option to put your car on the train all the way to / from Lapland. This is saving you approximately 1000 km of driving and able you to arrive fresh in the morning to your destination.

Getting there and around

by annase

Finland's transport network is highly developed. In 2005, the network of main roads had a total length of about 13,000 km. The network is mainly centered on Helsinki. The total length of all public roads is 80,000 km, of which 50,000 km are paved. The motorway network is still to a great extent under development, and currently totals only to about 700 km. There are 6,000 km of railways in the country. In addition, Helsinki has an urban rail network, and light rail systems are currently being planned in Turku and Tampere. Finland also has a considerable number of airports and large ports. The national railway company, VR (Valtion Rautatiet), offers InterCity and express trains throughout the country and the faster Pendolino trains connecting the major cities. There are large discounts (up to 50%) available for children (7–16 yr), students, senior citizens and conscripts. International...
