Parking

by AnnaLupilla

In central Helsinki, every car park costs money, as much as €2 per hour. Some parking spaces in Helsinki and elsewhere require drivers to set a small cardboard parking clock (pysäköintikiekko, lierally meaning 'parking puck') on the dashboard to indicate what time the car arrived, and signs will tell you how long you can park there.

Getting Around By Car

by AnnaLupilla

Driving around in Finland is hassle-free. Finnish drivers are remarkably considerate and polite - rarely will you hear a horn blast in anger and 'road rage' is almost an unknown phenomenon.Finland's road network is excellent between centers - although there are only few motorways around major cities - and well signposted. When approaching a town or city, look for signs saying 'keskusta' (center) or 'kauppatori' (market square), where you can usually (!!) find parking. There are no road tolls.

Getting There And Away

Direct flights to Finland are not the cheapest in Europe, though there are good flight connections. Check out the website of Ryan Air, which serves Tampere-Pirkkala airport from Frankfurt Hahn - the cheapest way to get from Germany to Finland, if you get a bargain.Attention: The airport Frankfurt-Hahn actually has got NOTHING to do with Frankfurt, a bus from Frankfurt Central Station takes you there in about two hours (cost: 12€ one-way per person).

Viking Line from Stockholm to Finland

by Muya

This is the best way to travel from Stockholm to Finland, in my opinion...not the fastest maybe, but the only one that allows you to see this !I say it many times again in my pages, but really, this is beautiful !! If you like the sea, you'll enjoy those landscapes...

The ferries are fun way to arrive in Finland. Silja Line , Viking Line and Tallink are the biggest companies operating on the Gulf of Finland and Gulf of Bothnia.

Driving in Finland

by sabsi

Driving is kinda terrible in Finland to be honest. In the south you will find some motorways so you can get from A to B quite quickly. But as soon as you have to use a normal route instead of a motorway it can get a) slow (because you can only drive 80 and maybe the truck in front of you goes only 60 ;)b) dangerous (because some people don't know how to overtake)c) a pain in the arse (because it takes ages to get from A to B)So for longer trips through Finland I'd take a train maybe?!

A cheap rental car

by sabsi

We checked some prices of car rentals because we wanted to rent a car for 3 days. When we found the quote from wwww.budget.com we couldn't believe our eyes how cheap it was and thought that there must be a trick somewhere. There wasn't. We paid 111 Euro (incl. insurance and free mileage) for the smallest car for three days from the Budget station in Helsinki's Malminkatu. We got a huge Ford Mondeo even because there wasn't a small car available. So when you are searching for a rental car I can only recommend checking www.budget.com first!!!

Santa Claus Express to Rovaniemi

by jverstri

A night train is always an interesting option to consider - you save time and on accomodation. An overnight trip from Helsinki to Rovaniemi costed me some 70 EUR (not very cheap), but I was lucky to be the only person in a 6 person compartiment, and I still could meet some people in the bar and have a drink there...
