Campingtrip by car

by Buehli

The prices you have to pay for the gaz in whole Scandinavia are very much higher than in Switzerland, and as I know also higher than in other european countries. Even though getting around by car leaves you the freedom to see also the unknown places, for example to have a break at a lake far away from civilisation. It's just amazing to drive along endless streets seeing nothing than woods.

Rented car

by ATLC

Renting a car was super relaxed in Finland. I arranged for it before I left home. The car was brought to the hotel in Oulu, the guy put it in the nearby parking garage for me and gave me the ticket. On our return I just parked it there again, gave keys and ticket to the hotel reception and that was it!Back home, I received a receipt by mail for filling up the gast tank. The expected charges for bringing and picking up the car to and from the hotel (two times € 13) were not charged at all.

The most beautiful way to get to Finland

by sabsi

The most gorgeous way to get to Finland is to take a day ferry from Stockholm to Turku. You pass by little islands for 11 hours including a stop at the Aland Islands. The Silja Line ferries than leave from Helsinki to go to Stockholm are absolutely amazing, they must be something like the biggest ferries in the world. The shopping mall in there and their height is unbelieveable.

Elks! Careful!

by sabsi

Be careful on the streets because there's loads of elks around. On some parts of the motorway there are signs that flash when there's an elk approaching. Sometimes there are fences but sometimes there's just the forest on the right and the left of the street. When you see an elk - drive slower than 70 kilometres an hour - otherwise they can't see you!!! And they are rather big!!!

We took the bus into town from the Ship, it was cheaper than the cabs. The towns in Finland are similar to other Scandanavian Countries. Walking is the preferred method of transportation. Most activities are in a center area of town.

Buzz fly from Stanstead UK...

by Gibb0

Buzz fly from Stanstead UK during the winter, beware some of there prices can be dearer than scheduled airlines, average price £60-£70 each way, (upto £135 ea way during busy periods so book well in advance for Buzz).Finnair & BA , SAS (transfer Stockholm)operate from Heathrow, the absolute cheapest flights are from www.ebookers.com, (LHW to HEL return) Finnair/BA £130 return inc taxes & SAS £115 inc taxes but the SAS flight is over 5 hours.Helsinki is 25 mins from Vantaa airport, a taxi will cost approx €25 (£16), a city bus will cost €3 (£2) bus stops are just outside the terminal buildings as are the taxis.Trains are exceptional. www.vr.fi is a must see site. These train are run an almost 100% timetable.Buses are very good, but they are run by independant companies, with seperate timetables, so ask at the bus station for times etc( finding bus routes info on the web is almost...

By airplane!Or if you're in...

by pinganille

By airplane!Or if you're in Stockholm or Tallin you can go to the capital Helsinki by boat on a minicruise. That is really nice too though both boats have the reputation of being partyboats and not exactly quiet... They have a great system of trains and long distance busses. Students even get 50% off of all fares as long as they make a Finnish studentcard upon arrival. This card is extremely cheap and make the comfortable and inexpensive trips even cheaper - naturally. Renting a car may be an alternative, but remember that Finland is a large country!

Getting around: Car

by mabu

If you want to go where you want when you want you will have to rent a car. Driving in Finland is easy. The roads are wide and specialy in the north don't have much traffic. Just don't underestimate the long distances between Towns/Villages and specialy Petrol stations! In towns/villages you are allowed to drive 50 km/h outside towns normaly 90 km/h or more if signposted. But watch out for animlas specialy reindeers. These animals sometimes stand in the middle of the road and won't move...

Getting Around: Train

by mabu

The Railway Network in Finland serves the biger towns only. Even so i think it's the best way to travel on the long distances.Finnish trains are very comfortable. Trains are all non-smoking, Intercity trains and Pendolinos have a Restaurant/Bar car.On long distances there are overnight trains with sleeping compartements. On seome overnight trains cars can be transported too.On the Picture you can see a Pendolino in Turku station. This is the fastest train in Finland. It tilts in curves so it can go faster.
