Public transportation works...

by kimmo_v

Public transportation works extremely well in Helsinki. You get anywhere easily by tram, bus, metro or commuter trains. Prices are decent: ticket costs 2 EUR if bought from transportation vehicle. Its cheaper if you bought it from kiosks or HKL-offices.The ticket is valid one hour, and you can use all transportation vehicles during that hour.

By airplane from anywhere, or by ship from Sweden(Stockholm) , Estonia(Tallinn) or Germany(Rostock). From Russia(StPetersburg&Moscow) by train is the easiest and less expensive alternative compared to aeroplane. From Helsinki-Vantaa airport(voted the best airport in the world) you have several alternatives to get to Helsinki city center. You can take a taxi, that costs appr. 25 EUR. Airport-taxi(yellow van) costs little less, maybe 10-15EUR(check the price advance).Finnair bus to Helsinki costs 5EUR, and it doesnt stop on the way to city. It takes about 25 minutes.Bus number 615(T,N) costs appr. 3EUR, stops all the bus-stops if needed, and it takes about 30-35 minutes to city.Cheapest way is walking. Its only 20 kilometers, and it takes about 3-5 hours, depending how fast you can walk. Not recommended during the winter time(extremely cold, you see...).

by ubiq

Buy metro, subway and tram ticket with mobile phone and SMS-message in Helsinki. Public transport system of Helsinki (HKL) allows you to buy a single ticket (covering 1 hour travel time) with SMS. Send a message 'a 641' to local number 16353. It costs about 1,5 euros. If you pay your mobile phone bill by yourself, this is not so handy.

The easiest is of course by plane but I don't think it's the best way if you only have enough time to try something else. If travelling from Europe with car/motorbike etc. there are many ways to get here - ferries from Sweden, Germany, Poland and Estonia at least. By ground you can come here only from Northern Sweden and Norway and Russia of course. But be prepared to queue if coming from Russia by car or bus.. Unless you take the train from St. Petersburgh. In Finland you can get almost everywhere by bus or train. Same goes when getting around in Helsinki.

If you rent a car in Finland...

by riku2

If you rent a car in Finland then it's going to be VERY expensive - the best deals are long weekend rates but otherwise expect to pay about US$500/week.Only drive a car in winter if you are used to driving on snow and ice - roads outside the city roads (as pictured) can be totally covered in snow and ice. We don't end up with so many world class rally and forumla 1 drivers for nothing !Otherwise driving is a dream - like in a tv commercial - empty well maintained wide roads with endless forests and lakes. Just watch out for the moose (especially at dusk and dawn).Do not drink and drive in Finland - the laws are very strict and roadblocks where everyone is breath checked are common - even on Motorways. Speeding fines are also very heavy - as a rule you can do 20km/h over the limit before the REALLY EXPENSIVE fines start (by really expensive I mean US$50,000).

As well as the obvious way of flying there are fantastic ferries from Stockholm to Helsinki. Viking line and Silja line run departures every night. To call them ferries is a bit of a disservice since they are the same kind of boats that cruise the carribean. Unfortunately special offers are only publicised to the domestic market (http://www.silja.fi/postituslista/) - the non-discounted prices are quite expensive.Inside Finland the railway system is great -fast trains that are efficient and punctual. Some even have discos and bars and childrens play rooms. The fastest ones are Pendolino and tilt when they go around corners.

by gorskial

The best (cheapest) way to get there from Sweden is to take the Viking Line ferry boat fron Stockholm to Turku. It's apparently the only sea-liner on this route on which cabins are not compulsory.I was hitch-hiking to make my way around and I gotta say it worked incredibly good. I often got picked up within 5-10 minutes. It only got tougher when I was close to the Russian border. Well I guess people thought I was Russian, as did the guys who gave me a ride.

On cruise ships. Ships go between Finland and Sweden. There are two companies Silja line and Viking line, both excellent. The ships are huge, beautiful, full of activities;sauna, swimming pool, restaurants, bars, discos, places for kids..The view in the archipelago is amazing! One can only see it him/herself.www-pages: www.silja.fiwww.vikingline.fi(both pages are also in English)

by anupamr

You could get there by air. But reaching Helsinki on a cruise ship from another place in western Europe would be very romantic! There's nice public tranportation available -trams (incuding the round-the-city sightseeing tram), buses and the neat metro.

To Finland you can get really cheap from Sweden by ferry. I don't know the exact prises, but it's cheap and included a lot of fun.If you want to get around in Helsinki, use buss, tram of walk. I prefer walking. But getting around Finland, the cheapest way is to use train. There are also busses, but sometimes they seem to be so expensive.
