The winter in northern Finland last from October to May...considering my own experience. Of course, for Finns, when temperatures go up to 5°C it is not winter anymore. But it can go below -30°C and it is really unconfortable, but average is -20°C. Imagine that your freezer is a warm place compare to the outside!!! So all kind of hair freezed instantly (see photo), inside your nose you have little "ice rocks", and to breath becomes difficult. But life continues after all, this make appreciate summer so much more.

It is very easy to fall in love with a Finnish woman, Finnish women are fully independent, they are commonly blondes, and occasionally they are also extremely beautiful. The Finnish society is very equal, women treated here like men, they also think they can drink as much as men, and of course, they can drink more then any foreign man, so be aware of that. Just don’t misunderstand the meaning of the freedom here.

did you remember to be a good boy or a good girl during the year? if not, forget about the presents! you see, santa clause's (joulupukki) little helpers called 'tontut' are constantly observing behind the windows whether you are good or not ;)) when xmas comes, santa claus will fly from a fjeld in northern finland called 'korvatunturi' with his reindeers & sleigh to give presents only to the families whose children have been good & kind :)) this happenes while you are sleeping the night before xmas eve. and on the xmas eve when you wakeup, there is a mountain of presents under the xmas tree waiting to be opened :)))

As you know Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer lives in Finland and of course thousands of his species. Suddenly they appear on roadside and cross the road without watching to the right and left. Be always aware of this - it happend several times to me!

Watch out the cars, pedestrians!!! Unfortunately Finland is the most dangerous country in scandinavia(maybe in europe) for pedestrians in the citys. If the traffic light is yellow for the vehicles, law says you have to get ready to stop. Well, in Finland it means(for a drivers) to put the pedal down and try to get over the crossroad to save few seconds. Unluckily they dont always manage to do that, and thats why they will hit pedestrians, who trust the traffic lights and start to walk when the light is green. Lot of peoples get killed that way, almost weekly. So, even the green light is on, look to your left to make sure, that some f*****g idiot isnt coming from there with a grin in his/hers face!!
I feel ashame about finnish drivers :(

    Mosquitos

  • During the summer time mosquitos can be nasty.
You don't get malaria from Finnish mosquitos - just some itching, which might be annoying.

The amount of mosquitos can vary a lot from summer to summer and from place to place - Lappland is kind of "famous" because of them. Mostly mosquitos like to spend their time away from the sunshine and in spruce woods.
You might want to get yourself some mosquito-protection if you are going to spend your evening outside in the woods.

...oh and just to let you know: The ones that bite (or actually sting) are females.

  • PEOPLE
People walk in city streets 24 hours a day mainly with no problem.
It is still wise to avoid some places in the cities after dark and late at night.
If problems occur the most likely reason is an aggressive Finnish drunken man (or a small group).
The actual drunkards usually make more noise than disturb otherwise.
Aggressive drunken female is also not impossible.
Several bigger ethnic groups exist so the
aggression can of course also come from those groups.
In the capital city there are people of over 100 nationalities so one disturbed person of any nationality could in principle be a problem.
(The biggest ethnic groups are propably gypsy's (mainly Finnish born),
Russians & Inkeri-Russians, Estonians, refugees from Somalia)
Drugs are used, mainly in the cities, so some drug users may occur.
Pickpockets do occur. Because Finnish criminals are mostly too stupid and lazy to learn such a difficult profession as a pickpocket is, they are mainly or completely done by people from foreign origin.
A violent rubbery is not very much likely. An attack from a drunken
in some City Centrum at side street in the middle of night, just for the fun of doing it, is more likely than a violent rubbery.

    WINTER
In winter some tourist go wondering in Lapland outside the roads meant for them. They can get deadly lost. In winter the nights are very cold there. This happens from time to time.
The streets in the cities can sometimes be very slippery from Noveber to March - a real danger (with bad luck even deadly). Every year 50 000 people needs doctor do to slipping. Therefor In winter weather broadcasts there is now also walking conditions for pedesterians.

    DECEASES
No sars by the end of May 2005.
AIDS figures are not very high .
Generally the health system is quite good and many bad decease's don't occur at all. Tap water is drinkable almost everywhere Only f.ex. in some Sauna ,
a place to sweat and wash, near the beach it might come directly from the lake. (In some countries the word sauna means falsely brothell. ).

  • There are also (too many) of those, who like to drink all the alcohol they can get and then have a fight.
Some Finns might be nice and joyful when drunked - and that's the way it should be, but still you might meet many of those Finns who have drunk that "bad booze".

  • Finnish Vodka is smooth, especially when chilled. Its so smooth that your next day may be a little foggy. Be careful not to miss the boat ride home.
