by pinganille

When in the woods you may want to be careful... As long as you're walking near houses and where you can sense people are living, it's okay. But don't get too far when walking as the woods are famous for the bears. Honestly!

did you remember to be a good boy or a good girl during the year? if not, forget about the presents! you see, santa clause's (joulupukki) little helpers called 'tontut' are constantly observing behind the windows whether you are good or not ;)) when xmas comes, santa claus will fly from a fjeld in northern finland called 'korvatunturi' with his reindeers & sleigh to give presents only to the families whose children have been good & kind :)) this happenes while you are sleeping the night before xmas eve. and on the xmas eve when you wakeup, there is a mountain of presents under the xmas tree waiting to be opened :)))

Watch out the cars,...

by kimmo_v

Watch out the cars, pedestrians!!! Unfortunately Finland is the most dangerous country in scandinavia(maybe in europe) for pedestrians in the citys. If the traffic light is yellow for the vehicles, law says you have to get ready to stop. Well, in Finland it means(for a drivers) to put the pedal down and try to get over the crossroad to save few seconds. Unluckily they dont always manage to do that, and thats why they will hit pedestrians, who trust the traffic lights and start to walk when the light is green. Lot of peoples get killed that way, almost weekly. So, even the green light is on, look to your left to make sure, that some f*****g idiot isnt coming from there with a grin in his/hers face!!I feel ashame about finnish drivers :(

Healt warnings in Finland? :)...

by Sarppa

Healt warnings in Finland? :) None! Really, at least I can't think of any. And what comes to the corrupt officials - there was a world wide survey saying that Finland is one of the most anti-corrupt countries in the world! The only risk I can come up with is the pickpockets (at least here in Helsinki). I do think it's a problem everywhere but guess you can never too careful with you purse.

Finland outside of Helsinki...

by riku2

Finland outside of Helsinki isn't that geared for tourists. There are some tourist oriented things in lappland in the winter and the nice towns of Porvoo and Tammisaari in the south. But don't go into the countryside expecting nice pubs and good restaurants. Finns aren't in the habit of eating out so your choice will be rather limited. Also like it or not the tourist season is very short - everyone in Finland basically takes their holiday in July and so that is when the tourist attractions are open - expect very limited opening hours outside those times. B&B - forget it - doesn't exist in Finland. Hotels have cheap rates in July (when they're empty because ALL business travelers are on holiday), otherwise they're quiet expensive. Mini-breaks - forget it, everyone used up their holiday in July.

Mosquitos are a pest when you...

Mosquitos are a pest when you leave the cities. We have two types of them:Hyttynen, a small mosquito that likes moisture and hates the sun. They sting you to suck your blood. The most annoying is their sound though. Especially when you want to sleep. Luckily you can fight these with Off.Of course we must also have a mosquito for sunny days. They are called paarma. These come in two flavours. One is about as big as a hornet. It bites a piece of your flesh and then flies away to chew on it. On a very silent summer day you can hear all the munching from the forest. The other one is smaller and more silent but it bites harder. I may exaggerate (a bit) but I really hate these guys. No! Wait! There's one more: Mäkärä. These guys are luckily only in Lapland. They are small but there's lots of them and they bite hard. Luckily I haven't had the pleasure to meet one yet Did I mention that the bites...

Finnish is a bilingual coutry, official languages being finnish and swedish. However, swedish is not spoken in many places. English is the choice for the language, especially younger people can speak it, however they may be rather shy.

THE PEOPLE!! (as seen on the pic) Ha ha, not really.Finland is pretty safe, not that many pickpockets either (in the summer last year there was some story on the news about the increasing number of them, lurking for tourists wallets), but better to be safe than sorry. the streets are quite safe to walk during the night as well, just use your common sense. I feel safer walking in the centre of the city during night (because of all the other people and the police around) than around where I actually live, in a suburban area where it's much quieter.

by katlau

When driving a car on Finnish roads you might be surprised by a moose. It is a huge animal and likes to wander especially in the evening and when ever it´s getting darker outside. It is very difficult to notice a moose in time, so drive slowly when you see this sign.In Lappland you might see a similar sign for reindeer.

MOOSE DANGER!Be aware of moose when driving by car of when in the forest. Moose is the largest of the animals living in Finland. If You meet this animal on the road, it won´t move. Some tips when encountering the moose:- when on the road try to pass on the back side - when in the forest escape very calmly - always use the lights in the car
