Don't be put off by the funny...

by Tsakane

Don't be put off by the funny attitude Finns have towards foreigners... It's only curiosity!!! The friends you manage to make in Finland are the most reliable ones. But it can take time to get to know them, so be patient! The one thing I'm sorry about is that even Finland is infected by the sad sickness of racism... You might meet the so called 'skinhead', but don't think the general attitude is on their side! It's only that Finns are really private people&they hate getting involved in other people's affairs. So, if you get into a fight, don't expect to get help from passers-by...

by Ninnu

I´m happy to say that finland is a very safe place to travel!! There are hardly any robberies, and the people are very helpful and friendly towards tourist. Think that here you can leave your car unlocked (just not in down town areas), allthough i prefer my car locked. You can safely drink water, there are hardly no transmitted diseases so you dont have to take any vaccination. There are no 'tourist prices' in finland so when you buy something you pay exactly the same price that finns do. When getting a cab you can rely that it takes you straight to the right adress and you allways pay just for the trip, no x-tras add. Finnish people are extremely honest it´s considered a great failure if you cheet.Finland is a bit expencive though... Allthough its nothing compared to Mexicos Playa de la carmen... one way trip by bus from Helsinki to Turku (155 km) costs about 15$ and a Big Mac costs...

by kayekaye

Beware of small-town downtown on a Friday night (particularly last of the month - payday). Most drunks are amiable and will wander off if treated with humour but it is not difficult to get aggravation or to come across fighting.

Irtokarkki!!!!!!! Mind that!!!...

by gema

Irtokarkki!!!!!!! Mind that!!! Must be allover Finland, although I have seen it only in Helsinki; for the reason I am staying mainly in the capital---I forgot to say; it´s a sweet shop- lot´s of everything, especially of liquorice and the more heavier one: salmiakki-MMh... Once U started, u can´t stop... yes, that´s true, U hardly can´t find ANY liquorice in Austria, and of course not any salmiakki then. QUESTION: Is there a difference in the tongues of the nations?!?

I've been warned myself of the...

by Italian_Roxy

I've been warned myself of the presence of earth and water snakes (obvioulsy not in the cities :-)). Try to be familiar also with spiders and please don't pick mushrooms unless you know them well. Most of them are poisonous, although if boiled, they say (the Finns) you can eat them.A very big danger is that you can fall in love with Finland and you think to leave all your relatives to move there for all your life. May be you have to be a very self-controlled and wise person not to do that. There is also the possibility-danger you can become pure-air addicted and I don't know any remedies for that when you return home and breath your usual smoggy air.BIG WARNING: dogs are not allowed in pubs or restaurants of any kind. I had to leave my poor yorkie at home when I went out to have dinner!
