    Railway station
    by german_eagle
Colmar is located on a major railway route between Strasbourg and Basel. Trains are running frequently, usually every hour.

The railway station itself is an architectural sight, built in Art Nouveau style. It is unfortunately located somewhat southwest of the old town. It is a walk of about 10 - 15 minutes to the old town (and back).

Walk along Rue de la Republique. After two blocks turn right and cross the nice park with the Bruat Fountain and continue via Rapp Monument and Rue des Tetes to the Unterlinden Museum where you should start the sightseeing.

  • When I planned my day trip from Freiburg/Germany to Colmar I realised how lousy the connections between the two cities are. Unbelievable since they are so close to each other. The Deutsche Bahn website even gave me directions via Basel! Brrrrr!

Finally I found out that I could go by suburban railway to Breisach and from there to Colmar by bus - but this bus runs only four times or so each day. My hotel guest card provided free travel on the Freiburg - Breisach train and the fare for the bus was 3.60 Euro each way. I highly recommend to get off the bus in Colmar at the huge parking lot north of the old town - don't go all the way to the final stop (railway station) like I did. It is a detour of at least 15 minutes.

I left Freiburg 9.25 am and arrived Colmar 10.26 (the only reasonable morning connection - don't miss it!). Back 5.20 pm from Colmar by bus, changing in Breisach, arrival 6.32 pm Freiburg. There is ONE later connection at 7 or 8 something from Colmar.

Most trains between Strasbourg and Basel stop here (just not the fastest express trains so DO check) so train is definately easy. This also means the train from Brussels/Luxemburg to Milan. Colmar is only half an hour south of Strasbourg but I would advise you to book a seat for Sunday evening travel when all of France seems to have been out hiking in the nearby Vosges mountains.

  • One thing I dislike is going to a transportation site and having to look at a bus/train, etc. map one small grid at a time. I like to see an overview of the map.

The TRACE [Colmar public transportation] website lets you see only one small 225x225 pixel grid of the map at a time. To remedy this, the link below opens a page that loads the entire grid of the Colmar bus map into a browser window.

best is to take the TGV high speed train if coming to Colmar (other than a car ::)) business trip will do the train.
plenty of schedule trains from gare de l'est hall Alsace, and prices varied depending on the season, you can request in advance look for PREM tickets, non refundable nor noncancellation but great pricing from a low of 22 euros! time is about 2h50 and the train station is near city center and my hotel mercure ::)

You make a brief stop in Strasbourg station but no need to get out of train.

Colmar is a great half day trip when you are staying in Strasbourg. Trains run from Gare du Strasbourg at least once an hour and the duration of the journey is approx. 33 minutes. Fare wa 16 Euro return but this was after my senior's discount had been applied.

    The little green train....

As I get older, I find that I have slowed down a bit where walking is concerned, so when there is a little road train tour available anywhere I take it. The reason being that I can learn where the things I want to see are located and I can even ferret out the ones that are not worthwhile or add ones that I knew nothing about.
In Colmar the little green train costs 6 Euro to ride and leaves from outside the Monoprix store in the little square.

    Maison Pfister
    by german_eagle
Maison Pfister is considered to be one of the most beautiful townhouses in Alsace. It is named after a previous owner of the 19th century.

The house was built 1537 for the hatter Ludwig Scherer. The architecture (with wood-carved loggia and alcove over two floors) is still medieval, but the decoration of the facade is in Renaissance style.

The paintings depict Habsburg Emperors of the 16th century, evangelists, bible scenes etc.

The charming quarter called "Little Venice" is one of the main attractions of Colmar. Picturesque colourful houses were built to both sides of the small river La Lauch, on which you can do a boat trip.

A lot of nice, small restaurants offer good local food. Just stroll along the cobbled alleys and soak up the atmosphere of past times.
