Eguisheim is one of the Plus Beaux Villages of France so is filled with charming shops and restaurants. We chose this for the very simple reason it was where we were when we got hungry and offered good menu choices at reasonable prices.
Inside, it was warm and friendly. It was one of the more pleasant days in mid-May so we chose to sit outside and found ourselves seated next to the owner's son and two schoolmates home for lunch. We enjoyed watching the three 10 or 11-year-old boys eat their three-course French lunch, sitting there looking like miniature adults carrying on dinnertime conversation very politely. We never heard a peep from them and their manners were impeccable. Mom and Dad came out twice, to bring their meals and to remove their dishes and excuse them . . . at which time they ran off to play before school started again. We were impressed, as we usually are by French children.
Favorite Dish: My husband got the trout plate and was very happy with it. I decided to try an Alsatian specialty, Baekeoffe. It is a casserole somewhat like the cassoulet in Languedoc except baekeoffe is made with potatoes instead of beans. They don't use quite the variety of meats as the cassoulet but it is baked in a special dish and brought out to the table crusty and steaming. It was very good and I certainly would get it again, but I do prefer beans to potatoes so prefer the cassoulet. That, however, is a personal preference. I highly recommend trying the baekeoffe and suspect any meat & potatoes person would love it.

We have been twice at noon time in this restaurant located just left of the Château and St Leo IX fountain. The dining room is in the cellar.
The advantage of this restaurant is that it serves a variety of salted and sweet Flammekueche - Tartes Flambées also at noon time. They are just excellent. Price 7 - 9 €.
My only negative remark is that the prices for the Alsatian wines "au pichet" (in a carafe) are on the high side.

Discover the octagonal Eguisheim.

Starting this intro I read the Legend of Eguisheim about Pope St Leo IX born here in 1002 as Bruno son of Count Hugon IV of Eguisheim. If I had read the legend before visiting Eguisheim I would have...
