We visited Auberge du Vieux Mulhouse on a Saturday night in mid May 2010 after making a reservation several days in advance knowing how popular it is. On the night, there was a constant stream of customers coming and going which added to the interest. I do like a little bit of theatre with my dine-out experience and having booked table number one just inside the front door, I was not disappointed. The entry desk was beside our table and it acted as a way point between the kitchen and wait staff so I was able to ascertain what customers were eating and eventually choose a dish for myself that I had seen and liked.
Table one also gives a view of the old town square and the passing parade.
Three fixed price Menus are offered €21.90, €27.90, €32
There is a huge choice from the carte:-
Nine hot starters ranging from vegetable soup €4.10 to twelve Alsatian Snails €13.90.
Ten cold starters ranging from dressed green salad €3.80 to terrine of game €6.80
Regional Specialities served with sauerkraut including Knuckle of Pork, Smoked Spare Ribs, Salt Pork Belly and Duck – The most expensive being €18.50 for a selection of the meats.
Six dishes from the sea - Fish, Shrimp, Frogs Legs – the most expensive being the frogs legs €19.90
The biggest selection is the Mains. Fifteen choices covering all the main food groups. Something for everyone: pork, veal, duck, chicken, rabbit, beef . Prices €7.60 (knackwurst) to €21 (beef fillet) with accompanying sauces : mustard, pepper, mushroom, munster cheese and a big range of accompaniments such as rice, vegs, noodles etc.(€4 )
Desserts – nine choices most expensive being profiteroles €7.20.
Wine list features Alsace wines €18.40-24.9 per bottle as well as Rhone; Bordeaux; Bourgogne €21-40 per bottle.
Open seven days a week - 10h00 à 22h30 extended on Fri & Sat night. Terrasse in the square when weather suits.
Favorite Dish: We chose from the carte and restricted ourselves to mains plus a couple of desserts. We each chose a regional Choucroutes type dish with a meat or selection of meats served with Sauerkraut and potatoes. Of course, the Choucroute royale with knuckle of pork, smoked pork chop, and two types of sausage dressed with mustard sauce chosen by the boys in the party of four was more than enough for the whole group. We put up a brave front and struggled to finish it while the ladies chose more approachable dishes served with just one type of meat.
After Alsace beer palate cleansers, we chose to drink a bottle of Hoehler Pinot Gris '07 (€22.9).
The ladies had dessert. Total bill was €120. Everyone enjoyed the meals and the friendly banter with wait staff over-seeing our table.

Set at the corner of rue Schlumberger just off Place Franklin, this small restaurant has a very welcoming atmosphere, and a warm feel. The food is wonderful, with large servings for very reasonnable prices (44 euros for 2 people, entree included), and the dessert are to die for.
The owner and other waiters are very personnable, and excel at what they do.
Everything is very clean - and the bathrooms are quite unique.
I strongly recommend this restaurant to couples and small families, or students in Mulhouse wanting to take their parents out for a nice meal.
Lunch is served nearly ery day, but it only for supper from Wednesday-Saturday. It is less than a 5 minute walk from the main square, 10 miuntes from the train station. Grand Rex tram station is about 500 m away.
Favorite Dish: Magret de Canard au peche, with Chevre au amandes as entree... Simply exquisite!

I needed a lot of time inside the museum inn order to see all of these great cars and did not at all get hungry - I guess such a museum would be a good place to start a diet for me...
Favorite Dish: When I passed by the restaurant, I just could see that they obviously close already before the museum does...
....and my eyes were much more attracted by the lovely Bugatti-sportscar, turning around slowly to be seen from all sides.
My conclusion : NO need to pack a lunch, in case that you intend to stay a full day in the museum - they have a restaurant inside as well !

This is the best place for coffee and pastry. Before 11:00am their breakfast specials are really special.
They also serve lunches that are good but not luxurious.
Favorite Dish: Expresso & pastry.

One of the main reasons to visit Mulhouse is to view the marvelous Cité de l'Automobile with The Schlumpf Collection. The museum is accessed by either tram or bus from the Central Railway Station :......

a big city with a beautiful historical centre ; unfortunately, the city is full of young criminals , protected as usual by the french judges (we are in france, do not forget)
