There are lots of things to buy in Riquewihr: crockery decorated (Hansi), Christmas ornaments, stuffed storks, excellent cakes... Some of these things could be put into the "Tourist traps" section but, in general, they are made on pretty good quality.
Route des Vins d'Alsace, production of Riesling, in particular Grand Crus of
" Schoenenbourg " (quoted as of 1644), constituting the " pearl of the vineyard ", and " Sporen "Renowned ever since the early Middle Ages, the wines of the Schoenenbourg were famous throughout northern Europe in the 16th century. The great Swiss cartographer, Merian, cited in 1663 : "The Schoenenbourg, which produces the most noble wine of this country". Voltaire owned several vineyards here.
On the Schoenenbourg, Riesling is King. Muscat and Tokay Pinot Gris also prosper admirably.
Schoenenbourg Grand Cru wines age particularly well, and in time develop powerful, rich aromas, Its microclimate makes it admirably suited to the production of prestigious Vendange Tardive and Selection de Grains Nobles late-harvest wines.
What to buy: of course vine
What to buy:
The main reason for our visit was to buy great alsacian wines directly from the winegrovers.
They will always welcome you and offer to taste their wines - and you don't have to be in large groups to do so - we (two persons) were each time warmly welcomed and provided with detailed comments on their ways of work, the properties of the soil and the quality of the wines.
Here is a list of winegrovers we visited:
* MITTNACHT-KLACK Domaine
- Riesling 2001 Grand Cru "Shoenenbourg"
- Riesling 2001 Grand Cru "Rosacker"
* SPIELMANN Sylvie Domaine
==> I must make a comment on this domain, located in Bergheim and especially about Sylvie Spielman herself.
As usual we drove there (not far from Riquewihr) and asked a worker if it would be possible to buy some bottles? He opened the tasting room door and asked us to wait in the first room while someone was coming to present the wines.
After a while a lady entered, passed us and went opening the shades of the large tasting room and while she was letting the sun in she suddenly asked us how did we find the domain and WHY were we there with a strong and furious tone??
Even my so talkative husband was shocked and couldn't say a word for few seconds.
I don't even remember if we ever answered those two questions as the lady came back to us introduced herself as Sylvie Spielman and invited us to sit down at the table.
While doing so, she was quickly at the table too with five bottles and a few glasses and started to tell about the domain, her history, the soil, the wines...
THIS wine tasting session has been so far one of the BEST!! Sylvie talked so passionately about her love for wines that after we finally came to the end and bought some wines, we realised that we had been more than two hours just listening and tasting wines.
