The choice microclimate, pebbly limestone soil and low yields of the Vorbourg enable Riesling, Gewurz-traminer, Tokay Pinot Gris and Muscat to reveal their specific character.
When Bishop Heddo of Strasbourg founded the convent of Ettenheim in 762, he bequeathed to it the ancestral vines of the Vorbourg of Rouffach. The bishop also left fine Vorbourg vineyards to the Eschau foundation. According to the historian Theobald Walter, there was hardly any religious foundation that did not obtain great benefit from the work of the winegrowers of Rouffach...
Typical characteristics :
The Vorbourg produces fine, powerful wines that age well and thus develop aromas of peach, apricot, mint, hazelnut...

Well, there's no selection for trail running and that's my thing :) but hey, you can hike where I run;)
Running through the vineyards on the hillsides of Rouffach is fantastic....I ran between the vines as well as the trails and roads which are nicely signposted as part of a wine tour type of thing. I stopped for a read of each sign... And maybe I did sample a couple of grapes here and there....don't tell anyone! :D
There's also a forest out the back which I have to explore further...it was lovely running but I came to a couple of dead ends where they clearly just go in to cut firewood...did find some old terracing though which was interesting... Maybe the let the forest re grow?
It's nice to run back through the village and grab a crusty roll to appease those hunger pangs... I will make note of the location on my next tip :)
I'm finally gonna start putting stuff on VT.... About time! Though I don't know how many other VTers want to trail run their way around the world haaaaaa!
Equipment: There's a sports store in the Main Street and they sell North Face gear too.... I just popped in and they were very friendly and spoke some English...
You can't miss the vineyards on the outskirts of town. it's hundreds of hectares! Start anywhere!
