Sainte Marie-aux-mines was a very important tissue producer from the XVIIIth century. This commercial activity occupied up to 33 manufactures and 14000 workers in 1870. The original production is a tissu of separately colored threads called Guinghan, Ecossais or Valencia (see DECOUVERTES for historic details). Only one manufacture exists today but the Fair Mode & Tissus attracks twice a year (April, October) some 12 000 visitors for high quality tissue and fashion accessories:
    Mode & Tissus, March31-April3rd,
    Théâtre municipal, Rue Osmont.

The community “Amish”, created in 1693 by Jacob Amman in Sainte Marie-aux-Mines, has elevated the handicraft of patchwork into an art. Every year, Sainte Marie-aux-Mines is the centre of the European patchwork meeting. The 10th edition in 2004 counted 16500 visitors and 114 exhibitors. 11th edition from 15th to 18th September 2005.

If you cannot attend those events, visit the textile museum in Maison de Pays.

Sainte Marie-aux-Mines and its surrounding "Val d'argent" ("Silver Valley") is well-known for mineral diversity (silver, copper, load, zinc) and long heritage contained in relics explaining mineral techniques and evolution. The area is a favourite place to study historical mining techniques due to the well-preserved and easily accessible mines (some can be visited, e.g. Gabe Gottes). Have a look at the very detailed description of the history and the mining techniques and a wonderful gallery of mineral and fossile pictures.

Since the 60's, an international mineral fair is held in the city:
"Euro Mineral" (MINERALS - GEMS - FOSSILS), 42nd edition, will take place from 23rd to 26th June 2005. 850 exhibitors from 60 countries and 25000 visitors are expected! Show reports with many photos are available at this address.

If you cannot attend Euro Mineral, Maison de Pays (Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines) suggests the whole year discovering the mining heritage and mineralogy and visiting mines.
