Many of the street level car parks in Strasbourg are occupied by men (unofficial) hussling you for money to look after your car. They will normally tell you not to put any money in the machine, but to give it to them. I have used these car-parks twice, and both times the men where still there when I returned to get my car, and there was no problems.
Additionally, Strasbourg has quite a problem with youth crime, and the arson of cars is not unknown. It is best not to leave your car on a quiet street, but to put it in guarded car-parks. For the same reason, don`t leave any valuables on show.
Fun Alternatives: Whilst I had no problems, it is a little odd, and there is no guarantee that you won`t get a ticket, towed, or broken into. I prefer to leave my car in one of the underground official car-parks. Be warned though, on weekends these get full very quickly, so come early to save waiting for a space.
Whenever and wherever you leave a car full of camping gear: try to find a safe place!!!!
Arriving back after a sightseeing walk through a city and a nice meal at a restaurant (where we had the famous CHOUCROUTE GARNIE ALSACIENNE ) and ....you find your car broken in that is very, very awful especially when you have to spend lots of time at foreign police stations......Filling in all those forms in a foreign languages takes so much precious time.......
